Finding true love is not an easy task for anybody. The constant pursuit of love is a roller coaster of commitment. This daunting task has plagued many people in life as well as many characters in A Midsummer Night’s Dream written by Shakespeare, especially Helena. The theme “the course of true love never did run smooth” definitely stays true with Helena. Her quest for love has many bumps in the road, getting involved in complicated love triangles and magical love potions. These hardships change Helena’s relationships with many characters and also change her.
To begin, Helena is significantly affected by the rejection from Demetrius and Lysander falling in love with her. She is heartbroken due to the rejection and starts to become angry with Lysander. At the …show more content…

The problem is that Demetrius does not feel the same way at all, in fact, he is in love with her good friend Hermia. Since Hermia is in love with Lysander and they are very happy together, she thinks that Demetrius should not try to pursue her. Demetrius and Helena always argue about who they are in love with. In the midst of a long argument, Demetrius says “For I am sick when I do look on thee.” (2.1.219) She is heartbroken. All she wants is to be with him, and he consistently rejects her. This clearly relates back to the central theme as her first attempt at love is a failure with Demetrius rejecting her. However, this is not the only part in the book where the main idea “the course of true love never did run smooth” is shown with Helena. After Lysander gets anointed with the potion on his eyelids, he first sees Helena and falls in love with her. Helena is disgusted, thinking that Lysander is just mocking her and not showing sincere love. Helena says
