Does everyone have the same chance to recover from the hardships in their life? Everyone has the same chance to do everything, it just depends on your amount of self-determination. Some people may be born in a better home, but could end up living a life of using drugs, whereas, another person could be born with drug addicted parents and end up living in New York City in a penthouse. The first one ended up living a life of using drugs because they had no self- determination and did nothing with their life. Whereas, the other person saw the life that is possible for them to live and chose to get an education and live a better life.
An example of a person that overcame the hardships of their life and made a better one is Lily Owens, a character from Secret Life of Bees. Throughout the book she overcame the hardships of not having a mother, an abusive father, and growing up in a house with black women in a time of segregation. Lily did not know what had really happened to her mother so all she grew up with was an abusive father. Lily used her self-determination and began a journey to find out what happened to her mother. Although life threw a lot of different obstacles at her while on this journey, she recovered from all of them by using her self determination. In this instance she was sitting out in a peach field looking at a couple of her mother’s belongings. When T-Ray came out he thought that she was out there with a boy, when that wasn’t the case. He would punish her by making her kneel on grits, he also yelled at her and called her names. “‘I expect this out of boys, Lily- you can’t blame them- but I expect more out of you. You act no better than a slut.’ He poured a mound of grits the size of an anthill on...

Self-determination is one of the most important things when it comes to overcoming the hardships that life has to throw at you. Everyone has the same opportunity to overcome these, it is just whether or not you chose to get up and do something with your life. Lily overcame an abusive father to find out the truth about her mother. Jeannette who had terrible parents who cared more about their unrealistic dreams to take care of her used self-determination to become a journalist in New York City. Even if you drop out of school at the age of 16, move away from your family and go to a state that you are not familiar with, using self-determination Jim Carrey was able to become a very successful and famous actor. You can overcome anything in your life as long as you have the self-determination to do so.
After reading Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt and The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, I observed that both these texts share a few similarities in the way the authors portray the difficulties their characters have to face, in order to get to where they are now. After researching a few rags to riches stories and using Slumdog Millionaire and The Pursuit of Happyness as my primary sources, I found out that successful individuals from harsh backgrounds shared similar complications, yet they had the will and perseverance to get to where they are now. They faced difficulties such as dealing with poverty and hardships of everyday life, struggling to overcome the effects of addiction and abuse. They found ways to overcome these difficulties through things like having some form of education, and utilizing their knowledge, to manipulate opportunities to their advantage in order to bring about success.
There are many people in today’s society who undergo many horrible experiences and are able to overcome the hard trials that are placed in front of them in order to become successful in life. While some individuals suggest that these individuals will struggle throughout life and others saying that they just need a few words of encouragement in order to progress in life. Regardless of one’s opinion, it is very important to remember that no one person has to go through anything alone and that help and encouragement will always be available for those who seek it.
To the point that if you work hard enough you can overcome the odds. Every person has a key to success with resilience, having someone believe in them and having the mindset that even if they fail they will persevere and push through in order to achieve their goal.
The 1960s was a period well remembered for all the civil rights movements that occurred during that time frame and the impact these movements had on the social and political dynamics of the United States. The three largest movements that were striving in the 1960s were the African American civil rights movement, the New Left movement and the feminist movement. These three movements were in a lot of ways influenced by each other and were very similar in terms of their goals and strategies. However, within each of these movements there were divisions in the way they tried to approach the issues they were fighting against. Looking at each of these movements individually will reveal the relationship they all share as well as the changes that were brought forth as a result of each groups actions.
Without adversity, I wouldn’t fully recognize the significance of prosperity and success. For example, in middle school, I had a difficult time with a couple people who I thought were my friends. Though they were nice to me, I just did not like the way they treated others, and eventually I stopped supporting them. Though it is not a particularly positive situation, I did derive meaning and awareness from this experience. Today, I know that the friends I want will not have demeaning characteristics. I found my identity by establishing my values and confirming them through my actions. I recall a conversation I had with my grandpa when he told me about how it doesn't matter about what other people are trying to achieve but rather what changes I want to bring about in the world. This advice has stuck with me for as long as I remember and the close rapport I have with my grandparents truly does inspire me to become the person I know I can be. In my opinion, identity and self-awareness are aspects in life that are mutable processes and often change throughout a lifetime based on circumstances. I realized that my experiences through both prosperity and hardship only serve to enhance my decisions and purpose in
Adversity is what guides an individual towards self-discovery. “Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.” This quote relates to adversity very well. That is because when going through hardships, an individual is able to realize what he/she is capable of doing. For instance, if a student chooses full IB for high school, but later realizes that is t...
Throughout life, you are obligated to endure many obstacles and obstructions. I had a vast number of hardships and found not all to be triumphant. Life is all about perseverance, motivation, how you handle tough times, and what you do to get passed them. Such hardships can include failure in a task in which great effort was given, the passing of a loved one, even fighting with a very close friend can all have devastating effects on ourselves.
The things that impact you can be bad or good, depending on your situation and how severe they were to you personally. I’ve been through many hardships and great things. Things like, being beaten as a child, raped, enduring racism, placed into the system and taken back out after a year or so, dropped out of college, overall failed at life so far; Went to a job where I worked hard, learned things about life, working hard, and that you can get more out of life if you want it, you can get more, you can be more, that there is an upside to every bad situation, and that other people are just that, real people. These things that have happened to me personally have shaped a lot of my personality and my outlook on life. Things that make you realize that other people go through events and have issues I believe are the things that make you an adult. This event for me was when I was working at EPB and really went through life every day with people of so many different ages and seeing the very real things that trouble them and let them enjoy things. This comradery as well as a want for everyone around you to be better and do better made me realize that everyone is going through the constant struggle I was. It wasn’t anything incredible or anything that made me realize it, but it changes everything on how you look at things and how you take in how other people act. I believe that
Hardship is part of everyone's life, people just go through it differently. Hardship is something that causes suffering or deprivation. Some synonyms are adversity, asperity, hardness, difficulty, and rigor. Some near antonyms are advantage, break, and opportunity. Hardship a good thing, but it can also be your enemy if you allow it. The taliban shot Malala Yousafzai in the head for daring to to speak up for girls’ education in pakistan. She is alive and speaking today because she persevered. Temple Grandin was bullied for her autism all her life. People never believed in her, but she made a humane curved cattle chute that 35% of cattle in america are handled in. Hannelore Wolff endured the horrors of 8 labor and concentration camps. She was assaulted and abused. But she survived and wrote a book on how she pushed through all the hardship in the camps. Hannelore, Malala, and Temple have all had to go through hardship to get where they are now.
“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant” says the Roman poet Horace. Basically what he is saying is that facing hardships can play a role in developing one’s character. Although the process of adversity might not be pleasurable in the moment, I believe that whenever one experiences adversity, it will always leave them better off than before.
I believe everyone can be successful as long as they try. You just have to have something called grit . “Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. “ says Angela Duckworth .I believe no matter how bad life gets there will always be something good coming your way. You just have to have grit. Thats where no matter how hard things get, you keep pushing. You just can't give up, cause if you do, your dreams will never come true.
Hardships can influence a person's life because it can be challenging for that person and they have to overcome them.
“Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.” (C.S. Lewis) Adversity is a difficult situation, it happens in everybody's life. It is something you cannot control but it is something that you can overcome, whether it is a big or small problem there is always a way to get over it. I believe that everyone has a characteristic to overcome adversity you just have to find it, mental toughness, determination, physical strength. Without characteristics like these it would be a lot harder to overcome.
Whether big or small, everybody faces some kind of adversity in their life. Through these examples we can see that what you do with the cards you’re dealt is what truly defines who you are. The reason why some people go beyond their personal limitations is because they have a great amount of self motivation and or support. People with fewer hardships may not take the steps to succeed because of no one pushing them to strive for their goals in life, or might have made some wrong choices in the past which led them into giving up.
Research from the University of California San Diego Scripps Institution of Oceanography said that species in the ocean consume a projected 12,000 to 24,000 tons of plastic every year in the Pacific Ocean (Nall, 2014). Pollution of recyclable materials in the oceans is one of the leading causes of why some marine species are nearing extinction. Many authors of articles and books analyzing this topic tend to agree that pollution of our oceans is a problem. The future of this problem is where their ideas tend to differ. The following four literature reviews attempt to demonstrate and support my belief that pollution is getting worse in the ocean and more marine life ecosystems are being affected, but there are things that we as humans can do to change this. Imagine a world where we didn’t have to constantly worry about the vicious cycle of humans affecting animals and then animals in turn affecting us through consumption.
