Film Maker The movie was directed by Mark Herman, but the book was written by an Irish novelist John Boyne. The movie was filmed in Budapest, Hungary. Mark Herman is an English filmmaker from Bridlington, United Kingdom. He was best known for screenwriting and directing The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
Purpose of the Film In the beginning portion of the film it portrays the innocence of the two boys Bruno and Schmuel. The purpose of the film is it uncovers the detestation of a Nazi inhumane imprisonment through the eyes of an innocent German kid. He lives with his 12 year-old sister, is mother, and his father who is an army commandant. The story begins in Germany in the 1940s, Bruno is coming home with his friends while imitating the aircraft noises. When he arrives home his parents tell him they need to move to the countryside for his father’s work. The father explains the move as “for the country.” After his family move he discovers a concentration camp however think its a farm outside his bedroom window. He asks his mom if he can make friends with the kids at the farm and why they wear pajamas. Bruno sneaks off towards the “farm” and he notices it is cutoff from by barbed wired fences. He meets another 8 year-old boy named Schmuel. As the story goes on the the two boys start a secret friendship hidden from the camp, and Bruno’s parents. Bruno brings food and board games to play with Schmuel and they form a bond. Until one day Bruno’s father tells Bruno and Gretel that their mother suggested living with a relative for the time being for their safety. On the day Bruno was supposed to leave he learns that Schmuel’s father is missing and decides to help him look for his father. Schmuel gives Bruno and pair of striped uniform and they are marched into a chamber. The nazi soldier tells the Jews to strip their clothes off for a “shower.” The movie ends with Bruno’s parents frantically searching for Bruno only to find out that Bruno died
