The best words to describe the film Spirited Away and Hayao Miyazaki would be, “Once you’ve met someone, you never really forget them”. Upon hearing those words, you get a sense of nostalgia and dreaminess that gets to you in a heart moving way. Throughout Miyazaki’s works, an intensely cultivating dream-like atmosphere is presented in an unforgettable experience. Each hand drawn scene and carefully picked soundtrack seems to fit nearly flawlessly with every heart wrenching lesson to be learned about memories, friends, hard work, and the reality of growing up. Along with the Hero’s journey, the theme that rises in the movie revolves around dislocation. Chihiro and her parents are moving to a new location while she is upset and has a somewhat bratty attitude about leaving her friends. Her father then tries to make it up by taking a “shortcut” to their new neighborhood which turns out to be an abandoned park. To voice her unhappiness, Chihiro wanders off while her parents eat the found food of the gods. The one thing that is lost in translation from the Japanese to English dub, is the Japanese mythology and values that just don’t directly translate to English. This is just one thing that can’t really be understood until you do watch the original Japanese version with either literal subs or understanding of the language. For example, the entire movie shows a bunch of creatures, spirits, and demons, so people who aren’t familiar with the mythology just won’t get it and pass it on as another creature (Reider).
