In the short story, “fiesta 1980”, in the book Drown, You Or the Main character, and Narrator, faced many conflicts. The central Idea of this text is about a young boy who struggles with his relationship, and his feelings towards his father. Most of the time Papi( Yuniors dad) is hostile, and declarative, towards Yunior, and the rest of the family. Papi was not only verbally aggressive, but also physically. There are these two particularly parts in the text, where Papi threatens Yunior. EVen though Yunior faces most of his conflict from Papi, Rafa couldn’t help but follow in his father's footsteps. Rafa is Yuniors older brother, he makes sure Yunior knows that by verbally putting him down, and physically hurting him. This passage reflects how writer, Dagoberto Gilb, in his short story, “Uncle Rock,” sets a tone of displeasure in Erick’s character as he writes a story about the emotions of a child while experiencing his mother’s attempt to find a suitable husband who can provide for her, and who can become a father to him. Erick’s quiet demeanor serves to emphasis how children may express their feelings of disapproval. By communicating through his silence or gestures, Erick shows his disapproval towards the men in a relationship with his mother as he experiences them.

Through Rafa’s gesture, it seems that the father’s behavior is not unusual. Rafa begins to move away because he fears what is going to happen next. This starts to stir up the question of, “Is Ramon physically abusive?” A bit of the abusive behavior is seen when Ramon picks Yunior up by the ear (Diaz 26). “If you throw up-- I won’t, I cried, tears in my eyes, more out of reflex than pain” (Diaz 26). Here, in the dialogue between Ramon and Yunior, it shows that Ramon is clearly in charge. When Yunior says that the tears that are falling out of his eyes, are more out of reflex than pain, there is no question if this sort of thing happens often. Yunior’s tears have become an involuntary response to the pain his father inflects on him. Through the language Junot Diaz used in that line, it is almost as if Yunior has been desensitized of pain, which adds to the idea that Ramon is, in fact, physically abusive. This is also reinstated when Yunior says, “Madai was too scared to open her eyes. Being around Papi all her life had turned her into a major-league wuss” (Diaz 26). Also, when Yunior vomits in the car, Ramon “jam[s] his finger into [Yunior’s] cheek, a nice solid thrust” (Diaz 30). Yunior describes his father as being imaginative with his punishments (Diaz 30). He says, “Earlier that year I’d written an essay in school called “My Father the Torturer…” (Diaz 30).
In every short story there is always a deeper meaning to the literature work, any author wants to communicate a multi-layered idea, to their readers, they wants their readers to connect to the short story that they are telling. The authors of these types of literature writings are able to take their readers on a journey within their writings. Unfortunately, problems may arise when an individual’s belief system or behavior does not coincide with that of family standards. Consequently, individuals may be forced to repress their emotions or avoid acting in ways that that are not acceptable to the family. In the novel The Rain God, written by Arturo Islas, we are presented with a story about a matriarchal family that deals with various conflicts. One major internal conflict is repression. Throughout the novel the characters act in strange ways and many of the family members have internal “monsters” that represent the past that they are repressing. In his article, “The Historical Imagination in Arturo Islas’s The Rain God and Migrant Souls”, Antonio C. Marquez’s implicitly asserts a true idea that The Rain God is a story about repression. Marquez’s idea can be supported from an analysis of secondary sources and a reading of the primary text.

Everyone has unforgettable school days that made a great impact on the mind of the person. I can never forget about my school days and the sports activities I have participated, got victory, and met failures. I have learnt not only education, but also life, as does the protagonist of the novel. Junot Díaz’s Drown, a collection of short stories, chronicles the events of Yunior and his family. Each story focuses Yunior and his struggle growing up as a Dominican immigrant and finding a place for himself within American society. Throughout the progression of the novel, Yunior realizes the stereotypes placed on him and recognizes that being white is advantageous. Yunior’s experience growing up both in the Dominican Republic and the States has shaped his perspective on life and life choices.
Suffering from the death of a close friend, the boy tries to ignore his feelings and jokes on his sister. His friend was a mental patient who threw himself off a building. Being really young and unable to cope with this tragedy, the boy jokes to his sister about the bridge collapsing. "The mention of the suicide and of the bridge collapsing set a depressing tone for the rest of the story" (Baker 170). Arguments about Raisinettes force the father to settle it by saying, "you will both spoil your lunch." As their day continues, their arguments become more serious and present concern for the father who is trying to understand his children better. In complete agreement with Justin Oeltzes’ paper, "A Sad Story," I also feel that this dark foreshadowing of time to come is an indication of the author’s direct intention to write a sad story.
“A Wall of Fire Rising”, short story written by Edwidge Danticat, presents one man’s desire for the freedom and also, the gap between reality and fantasy which is created by the desire. Two different perspectives of evaluating the life bring the conflict between the Guy and Lili who are parents to the little guy. Throughout the story, the Guy implies that he wants to do something that people will remind of him, but Lili who is opposing to the Guy, tries to settle the Guy down and keep up with the normal life that they are belong to. The Guy is aggressive, adventurous and reckless while Lili is realistic and responsible. The wall of fire is the metaphorical expression of the boundary where divides two different types of people. One is for the people who accept their position and try to do the best out of it, and the other for the people who are not satisfied with the circumstances and desires to turn the table. Through this essay, I am going to reveal how the contradiction in an unwise idealist’s attitude and his speech, and also how it drove the whole family into a horrible tragedy as well.

Nonetheless, this really is a tale of compelling love between the boy and his father. The actions of the boy throughout the story indicate that he really does love his father and seems very torn between his mother expectations and his father’s light heartedness. Many adults and children know this family circumstance so well that one can easily see the characters’ identities without the author even giving the boy and his father a name. Even without other surrounding verification of their lives, the plot, characters, and narrative have meshed together quite well.

He is a little boy with a big crush in an even bigger world, where thing don’t always go as expected. The boy acknowledges this in his innocent heart and soul, at the carnival, when he is deprived of accomplishing his biggest and most important journey; bringing his love something very special from Araby. This task was extremely vital to him, and it was left uncompleted. The reason that the boy could not get to Araby on time was because his uncle arrived home late, because he had forgotten about him. That was a very cruel thing to do knowing how important this was for his nephew, he reminded his uncle many times. The uncles response was “ The people are in bed and after their fist sleep now( )”. The motif of decay is seen in some symbolism too. The apple tree in the wild garden is symbolic to the tree of knowledge. However, the tree in the story is wild, meaning that knowledge is limited in the neighborhood. For example, when the previous owner, the priest, of the boy’s house had died, he had given all his money to charity and left his sister with nothing but old and used furniture.
