Before we start, what is feminism? Feminism is the belief in the social, economic, and political equality of the sexes. You might think that since feminism is a very important issue that half of the population is fighting for it that it should be shown and portrayed for international or local entertainment. Well as wonderful as that sound, unfortunately, we are still far from that future because something like a beauty pageant which is a show for all ages and genders still doesn’t stand for what feminism is for. Why do I accuse beauty pageants as anti-feminist? Below are the reasons why I think that beauty pageants do not celebrate womenkind and everything that feminism stands for.

Former contestants or winners of beauty pageants like Miss Universe have this sickening behavior for example when Miss Universe 1969(Gloria Diaz) said Miss Universe Canada 2017 could use to ‘lose 8 pounds’. They teach children that their value as a human being is only based on their appearance and physical attributes. In 2007, the American Psychological Association stated, “the hypersexualization of young girls is strongly associated with eating disorders, low self-esteem, and depression. It can also even lead to fewer girls pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics” (American Psychological Association, 2007). They should teach little girls that they can be powerful and be empowering even if they do not have a crown, a sash or a title.

Beauty pageants are outdated. Beauty pageants are based on the ancient idea that a women's beauty is more valuable than her brains. Women are judged harshly and their self-esteem often suffers when they do poorly in these events. Haven’t you notice that in beauty pageants women just walk around are only allowed to talk when they are asked to.
