According to the US Travel Association in 2012 only 3.5% of United States citizens traveled abroad which is about eleven-million out of 313 million people who currently live in the country. It’s a bit sad to see that so few people travel outside the country to go and see the wonderful world we live in. So for your consideration I hope my essay convinces you that I can be a part of that 3.5% of Americans. The Ireland Fellowship program is interesting to me because when I was younger my parents where in the United States Air Force and I got to travel and live in different places. Some of the places I have been to are Germany, Australia and Guam which is a U.S. territory. However my parents were never stationed in or near Ireland that is why I wish to be a part of this fellowship so I can go and see the land in which my ancestors lived in long ago. Before attending Middlesex Community College I was a student at Greater Lowell Technical High School in the Graphic Communications program. In the Graphic Communication program I learned leadership and teamwork skills and eventually was aske...

The intense competition of running for office at California Girls State was more than The first question was, “Have you ever traveled out of the country?”. All the girls answered confidently about all the countries they have visited and even added stories about their travels. Every girl there had the opportunity to visit countries across the ocean. As my turn reached and they tossed the ball to me, I answered honestly, “ I have never been out of the country”.

Being an international student in the Master of Social Work program at MSU has been a positive transition in my life. I believe that this study abroad program to Mexico during 2014 spring break will help me to have a better understanding of Latino culture which will enhance my personal growth as well as furthering my professional goal of working with children of poverty as a social worker.
At this time, I became a group leader in an after-school program for a 3rd-grade class. This was my first time working with children and as imagined, it was a tough transition. The students were Latino and African American, living in poverty stricken neighborhoods with a dysfunctional home life. The program focused on students who were at risk of retention. A large number of students were below average and had been recommended to receive extra academic support. As a result of my time spent working and learning with the students, I choose an educational path.
William Jennings Bryan was quoted in saying, “Destiny is not a matter of chance; it is matter of choice. It is not something to be waited for, but rather something to be achieved.” Bryan and I see eye to eye, for I also believe destiny is something you control. I want to be accepted into the National Honor Society so I can indeed steer my destiny towards a favorable pathway. The NHS can provide me with yet another way I can help others through numerous service projects. In addition, it will teach me to be a stronger leader and allow useful experiences to prevail. These experiences will be put to great use in future jobs and projects in the school or in the community. Lastly, NHS will be placed into an array of sun beams to happily bask in, because I will not let anyone, including myself, slack off. These polished characteristics will hopefully help me in the future by gaining acceptance into a top college and creating plentiful complimentary job opportunities.
The National Honors Society is defined as an organization that acknowledges remarkable high school students who exemplify leadership, character, and service. But possessing these qualities, goes beyond a definition. It is a person: one who upholds their own moral convictions, is always willing to help others, and tries to be an integral part of the community. I believe I work to define myself as this kind of person daily and would be a valuable member to the National Honors Society.

...iance, readers are capable of seeing how citizens in the world today try to be independent of others and sustain their personal beliefs and philosophy. Individuals have to put an end to conformity and trying to be a duplication of everyone else because they will never achieve success if they never decide for themselves. A person must not rely on the judgment and minds of others and learn to think for him or herself since depending on others only exhibits a person’s inferiority to larger institutions. People must stop using travel as an excuse to evade personal problems because if they do not have a direct confrontation with the dilemma, trying to escape will only lengthen it. People in today’s society must appreciate this work so they will approve of their individuality and be stronger in fighting against everyone else that disagrees with their personal philosophy.

There is nothing quite like traveling, going someplace new and finding out more about the world and yourself. Anyone can become a traveler it just takes a little bit of faith and courage. Traveling across the world or even across the country is a learning experience. When you are a traveler you see how people live and how different cultures work.
