The “Kinship in Community” was about gang prevention for high-risk youth. Father Boyle, the speaker of the event, was charismatic and funny. His speech was powerful, and inspiring. Before Father Boyle presented his speech, we watched a short film. The short film introduced Homeboy Industries, founded in 1988 by Father Boyle, that assisted former gang members with services such as, finding jobs, tattoo removal, counseling, education, and most importantly hope. Father Boyle's sense of humor was evident when he brought up a woman who went to his speech. The woman, who has been to many of his speeches before, cried and told him, “It never gets better.” The crowd erupted in laughter and applause, and gave Father Boyle a standing ovation. He helped Manuel and Snoopy, former rival gang members, through text messages. Father Boyle helped Dreamer, who has been in and out prison, find a job. Dreamer, who was happy and thankful he found a job, went to Father Boyle. Dreamer tells him “You know who I thank for?” Father Boyle, thinking it was him, asks, “Who?” Dreamer responds, “God.” The crowd erupted in laughter. Father Boyle helped a former gang member with a tattoo on his forehead that says “F*** the world.” The former gang member with a tattoo couldn't find a job because of his tattoo on his forehand. The Homeboy Industries offered him a tattoo removal, and managed to find him employment. Some of the Homeboy Industries members met President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden. President Obama shook one of the members' hand who promised not to wash his hand ever again. Father Boyle's most powerful story was about Jose, a former drug addict.
