Fall of the Roman Empire The Roman Empire was one of the most powerful empires in world history. Although they were the most powerful empire of their time they still collapsed. Many researchers believe that the main reason due to Rome falling was that they over expanded their territory. This also cause them to invade barbarian territories which cause wars and battles. Rome at its finest covered a vast area from north western europe to near east and all lands of the mediterranean. While Rome expanded their territory it grew harder and harder to find loyal troops. They had 25 different emperors in 75 years so many of the troops didn't know the emperor at all. Some were loyal to him but many were not. Rome began to hire foreign mercenary because they didn't have enough troops. So when the barbarians attacked the city of rome many of rome's own soldiers turned against Rome and sacked the city. Since they were constantly expanding they were always fighting a war so tax grew high which made the poor poorer and the rich richer. One person couldn't run all of Rome so they had many different leaders under the empire which cause many leaders to become corrupt. Western rome and eastern rome. The main city of Eastern Rome was Byzantium and Western Rome was located in Milan. The eastern side of Rome was very wealthy while the Western was in a financial crisis. The city was strong as one but as soon as they split everything got worse. Eastern rome supported the western for a while but as the western got worse and worse they slowly started to cut them off. So western rome collapsed because they could no longer support anything and eastern rome still stood because they were strong. If rome didn't expanded their territory so big they could have stayed as one and been would have lasted
