1. “Clarisse’s favorite subject wasn’t herself. It was everyone else, and me. She was the first person in a good many years I’ve really liked. She was the first person I can remember who looked straight at me as if I counted.” (68) Montag is talking to his wife Mildred in their home. He is telling her about how Clarisse made him feel like he matter unlike his wife. He is saying how Clarisse really wanted to get to know him. Clarisse really understood Montag and got along with him really well. His wife never really cared about anything other than her television. He is explaining how information in books is the important part not the book itself. Beatty is telling Montag how books make everyone not equal. Books is the main reason why everyone is not free because they don’t want people to know that they are in a “perfect society” because of the knowledge they learn. It also explains how they think they had success but really they did not. 4. “Fire’s real beauty is that is destroys responsibility and consequences. A problem gets too burdensome, then into the furnace with it. Now, Montag, you’re a burden. And the fire will lift you off my shoulders, clean, quick, sure; nothing to rot later.” (109) Beatty is talking to Montag outside of his house. He is saying that fire consumes everything.
