Likewise, even though the book was not as solemn as the current events in today’s society, discrimination is still brought upon between characters. As the characters were put the blame on, hatred was brought to them causing an arousal of fear. Many characters were innocent; although, that did not stop other people in the book to make the innocent look guilty. An example being, the author composed, “I never kept no poppets, not since I were a girl” (Miller 69). This statement was spoken by Elizabeth Procter as she discovered the allegation. There was a young character in the book, Abigail Williams, and she blamed Elizabeth Proctor for playing with poppets. Intolerance is when someone is unwilling to see someone else’s view-point, which leads to arguments. Intolerance ties in with the topic because this act bubbles up fear, and fear is the overall theme of both the novel and in reality. This topic was brought up throughout the book because when people were lying and being discriminated against, no one would try to see that person’s side. However, in most cases in the book, many characters were innocent. Towards the end of the book, one of the main characters, John Proctor has finally been brought to court due to being suspected of performing witchcraft. The book quoted, “I have been thinking I would confess to them, Elizabeth” (Miller 125). This quote was stated by John as he was talking to his wife, and he was willing to give his life up to end all the commotion his community was facing. Intolerance was brought into play because no one wanted to see Procter’s side of the story; therefore, he confessed to a crime that he had not acted upon. Throughout this whole process, he was scared and he felt trapped by the folks that surrounded him in his home town. This assertion is critical to be aware of because intolerance is done by everyone in today’s society. When a group of individuals want to do wrong to a person that is at fault, it is a person’s natural instinct to believe the indictment. Discrimination is defined as ¨the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.¨ 1863 was the year the slaves were finally freed, but that doesn't mean they weren't discriminated for more than a 100 year after that and even to this day there is still discrimination toward African Americans. Women of any race didn't even get the right to vote until August 18, 1920. Which was not quickly won, women had to fight for nearly 100 years previous to acquire a right that all should have. Groupthink has always been the dysfunctional idea that results from within a group that seeks harmony and conformity. Groupthink has been seen in Salem, MA, specifically in The Crucible, where townsfolk would go around accusing women, often innocent, of witchcraft. It has also been seen during the Red Scare, where Senator McCarthy would create a list of celebrities and other well-known people that he would accuse of being communists in the United States. His refusal to go to church and avoid baptizing his kids is due impart to him thinking that Reverend Parris is a dishonest church leader. All these acts against conformity truly define who he is at the end of the play when he avoids succumbing to the conformity. Proctor was falsely accused of being a witch and was facing execution. He was desperate to give in to the conformity because he was facing death, but he stayed true to himself and did not give in to conformity. Proctor says, “And there’s your first marvel… for now I do think some shred of goodness in John Proctor”; this implies that he realizes he made the morally right choice (Miller 144). He just saved the life of many innocent people by giving his own life. The Crucible by Arthur Miller is a short film where cruelty functions as a crucial motivation and a major social factor. In the film there was a lot of cruelty going on and helped shape the theme. There were some cases in the film that cruelty showed characteristics of a victim or one of the characters. Cruelty was apart of puritan aspects and it revealed that John didn’t care what he had to go through to save his soul.

In other words he believes that the cannot be his true self when he has to abide by lies and not by his morals. He thinks there is to much mention of hell in God’s church and about the dangers to the community to implicit in all this talk of witch craft. Everybody makes mistakes, but only the people who recognize the good in those mistakes are the people who can be redeemed from them. In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, many characters are put in desperate situations. Each person learns new things and further develops from each experience. Proctor learns how important his name is, Hale experiences extreme guilt over his actions and Giles learns to think before he speaks. In conclusion, in desperate situations individuals who possess insight are able to experience redemption.
Salem citizens in general were afraid of all ungodly things with their Puritan views. They had no trouble believing that, because Parris had called Reverend Hale, (known for his studies in demonic arts), there must truly be witchcraft within the town. The play progresses and certain characters begin to develop: here is a community full of underlying personal grudges. Religion pervades every aspect of life, 'A man may think that God sleeps, but God sees everything, I know it now.'; but it is a religion that lacks the ritual of confession. Here and throughout the play we see how this affects John Proctor, a man so proud of his name that guilt eats at his very heart, as he will not let out his secret pain in a vain attempt to keep his integrity.
It was easier for them to blame the devil for the problems of society than fix the problems of their own strict way of life. So the girls involved with Abigail, like Mercy Lewis and Mary Warren, named many people in the town as witches. These people were put in jail and would be hanged if they did not confess to the crime of devil worship or witchcraft. Another part of the developing plot is that John Proctor knows Abigail and her friends are lying, but he is afraid to say anything because eight months before he had an affair with Abigail and did not want to be seen by the town as a lecher, which means wife cheater. So, Mr. Proctor has to fight with himself to come out and tell the truth, or his wife might die because of Abigail saying she was a witch.
Fear, resulting in chaos, and overturned lives affected the personal decisions of John Proctor, thus creating inner conflicts, as well as desperation in the story. In Arthur Miller's The Crucible, John Proctor's stand in a society where opinion drove fate created ignominy towards him and his beliefs. At first he hid his horrible sin inside, fearing the consequences. When he finally did, he was placed in a tangled labyrinth of feelings as to what his next action should be. Lastly, it's Proctor's defiance and integrity in his own self that proved him stronger than the entire community of Salem. Proctor's tremulous feelings and general unease of the situation built up to his defining point of confession. Theocracy came together to take coerce control Salem and it's actions. Proctor saw this and feared, for diabolism was a practice unheard of. Danforth states, "You must understand, sir, a person is either with the church or against it, there be no road between. We live no longer in the dusky afternoon and evil mixed itself with good and befuddled world. Now by God's grace the good folk and evil entirely separate"(63).

Arthur Miller, the author of The Crucible, puts it in a way that is easy to understand. "It is still impossible for man to organize his social life without repressions." This is evident in his play, The Crucible, demonstrating that within a society, oppression will always be present due to personal motives, disputes and misuses of power, as well as distorted religious beliefs.
Many of the victims chose the importance of the opinion of man than the opinion of God. Those victims chose to risk their reputation of God than with man. This factor reveals that some of the most religious people in Puritan society cared more about upholding man’s standards rather than God’s. Many of the victims confessed others to witchcraft to save their own life. This reveals how selfish and unmoral many of the people are. John proctor said when being forced to confess or die that “ I speak my own sins; I cannot judge another. I have no tongue for it”. John is refusing to lie on another, refusing to judge others, but also refusing to live. Cruelty reveals how selfless people are. John refused to bring others down like Abigail did him. How individuals handle being treated unfairly shows more about them than the person treating them unfair.

In the play, Puritanism and their beliefs and values ruled Salem. Puritanism are a close community that follow a strict set of rules; there is little freedom for individuals. Individuals who are independent or do not conform to their values are immediately seen as threats to the community. The character of John Proctor is an example of a non-conformist as he believes in justice. Proctor’s sarcastic remark against Reverend Parris: “I like not the smell of this ‘authority,’” highlights his disagreement with Parris’s power and values. The sensory imagery emphasises Proctor’s non-conformist attitude and shows his deviance towards Parris, who is considered the highest power in society as he is the man closest to God. Proctor’s blasphemous exclaim: “I say God is dead!,” is a subversion of the Puritan society and theocratic values. The high modality emphasises his rebellion against Puritanism and emphasises his nonconforming nature. His refusal to conform to the Puritan values ultimately ends in his demise. The ripping of his confession and death symbolises his refusal to conform and his integrity; he does not want to be used to justify the witch hunt and the injustices the court has done.
