Eviction causes a vicious cycle of homeless and poverty. Eviction promotes homelessness by tarnishing individual’s ability to obtain adequate housing, and worsens poverty and exclusion by trapping individuals and families in a vicious circle of difficult circumstances. The primary cause of eviction is financial; people from lower socioeconomic situations are facing the worst affordability crisis in several generations .There is also a tertiary affect on a person’s health when exposed to prolonged homelessness from eviction. Eviction and homelessness is extremely diverse, effecting men, women, families, children minorities and the mentally ill. Increasingly, homelessness is becoming more diverse, no longer characterized as a problem of single adult men, but of families, women, children, seniors, and minorities . This continuum of uncertainty and eviction puts the individual in a difficult position, limiting the chances of the individual or family of escaping the cycle. Further pressures from other economical needs in the person(s) lives exacerbates these situations. When a person applies for housing, either through an authority, or in the private rental market, they must provide references. If a person has previously been evicted they forfeit the right to most government subsidized housing programs . If they have been systemically put into poverty and forced eviction has continually occurred, then the person has an extremely difficult time attain adequate housing. A person loses their damage deposit when evicted, and for the next rental, is forced to sacrifice expenditures for food, clothing, or debt payments to produce a damage deposit. The person or family then experiences further poverty, and damage to their credit. Often landlords are asking for a credit check to determine suitability of applicant. When a family or person is displaced from eviction, it usually leads to homelessness and loss of household belongings. Eviction and homelessness effect a diverse cross section of society including men, women, families, children, minority groups and the mentally ill. There are many reasons that people from better socioeconomic situations don’t understand the issue of eviction and homelessness, but with education this can be helped. There are many ways to solve the issues of eviction and homelessness, primarily government intervention with investment in affordable housing units, and rental subsidies for persons who are economically disadvantaged.
