Sir Frances Bacon, a sixteenth-century philosopher and chancellor of England is credited with coining the phrase, "knowledge is power." Knowledge is not only a means of personal development but vital to businesses throughout the world. It is the fuel for success and a key to open the door for many opportunities. In the business world, knowledge is only as good as the people who communicate it. A solid foundation within an organization is built upon an open line of communication. Imagine a coworker or supervisor within an organization is withholding valuable knowledge. What type of effect does it have at the individual and company level? These types of actions may have enormous ethical ramifications starting at the bottom. Factors such as job security, personal insecurities and micromanagement are all possible explanations for withholding job related information which contribute to a breakdown in communication.
A broad definition of ethics consists of moral principles and the philosophy of right and wrong. From this definition ethics is not a reference in which people use to live their lives by, but a way in which each person can form their own guidelines. To break the definition down even further, moral principles are dependent on the person and philosophy is defined as a belief system or theory. Ethical views are shaped by everything and everyone we come in contact with. Life experiences, religious convictions, views from a higher power, governmental law, family and friends are all contributing factors to how people view ethics.

A lack of communication at any level has the potential to lead successful companies down the wrong path. By creating a solid set of ethical principles corporate management is able to share their values with employees. Tying these ethical guidelines through positive reinforcement is also a great way to educate employees and keep these corporate principles relevant. Whether your ethical approach is utilitarian or deontological, communication plays an important role in being effective and efficient. Effective leaders should strive to develop ethical values that encompass their mission and find the best way to communicate those values to their employees.
Leaders who treat their employees with fairness, honesty, and provide frequent, accurate information are seen as more effective. According to Robbins and Judge (2014), “trust is a primary attribute associated with leadership and followers who trust a leader are confident their rights and interest will not be abused” (p.193). The old General Motor Corporation had eleven different CEO’s from 1923 until 2009 each with their own unique leadership style, which directed employees toward the organization goals. Unfortunately, many of the top level managers under the CEO’s had the tendency of filtering out information that did not match up with their pre-conceived notions about a particular issue and they lacked upward communication. One consumer goal of General Motors was to build trust in the company so people would be repeat customers, but building trust between employees and establishing an ethical culture was not a top priority of the organization. Goal directed leadership alone is important, but differs from a structure of leadership based on ethics. It is important to note, that effective leadership may not be the same as leadership founded on ethical principles. Business competence must exist, along with personal leadership accountability in ethical decisions. Business ethics simply can be defined as the application of business values in the business practice of a company (Seawell 2010, p. 2). For a multinational company, business ethics is one of the critical aspects need to be taken into account in business decision-making processes. Failure to give attention on ethics may bring consequences on company’s reputation (Meyer & Jebe 2010, p. 159). The company is expected not only to pursue its own profits but also contributing to the environmental and social welfare of the community where it operates (Svensson & Wood 2008, p. 308).
Ethics are moral principles that can be used to help guide peoples decisions. We are all different and therefore our beliefs and opinions differ. There are many ethical theories, and according to Panza and Potthast (n.d.) the following are some that are widely used. Virtue ethics is one theory which states that personality is the most important thing. Living an ethical life, acting right, requires that one develops and demonstrates the quality of courage, compassion, wisdom, and temperance. It also requires that greed, jealousy, and selfishness is avoided. Utilitarianism states that the amount of happiness and suffering created by a person’s actions is what matters the most. As a result, acting rightly includes maximizing the amount of happiness and minimizing the amount of suffering around you. At times you may need to break some of the traditional moral rules to achieve such an outcome. Kantianism is another theory which highlights the principles behind actions rather than an actions results. It states that it requires to be motivated by good principles that treats everyone with respect. If you’re motivated by good principles, you overcome your animal instinct and act ethically. Another ethical theory is the Contract theory, which suggest that ethics should be thought of as terms of agreements between people. It suggests that doing the right thing means obeying agreements set by members rather than those of society. For this theory ethics isn’t necessarily about character, consequences, or principles. Ethics in business is a highly important concept, as it can affect a company’s profits, salaries paid to employees and CEOs, and public opinion, among many other aspects of a business. Ethics can be enforced by company policies and guidelines, set a precedent when a company is faced with an important decision, and are also evolving thanks to new technology and situations that arise due to technology usage. Businesses have a duty to maintain their ethical responsibilities and also to help their employees enforce these responsibilities in and out of the workplace. However, ethics and the foundation for them are not always black and white. There are many different ethical theories, however Utilitarianism, Kant’s Deontological ethics, and Virtue ethics are three of the most well known theories in existence. Each theory is distinct in that it has a different quality used to determine ethicality and allows for a person to choose which system of ethics works best with both the situation and his or her personal ethical preferences.
