Our day to day actions effect not only us but all of those around us, so it is imperative in the workplace today for managers and supervisors to understand how to deal with maintaining and managing an ethically diverse work environment, in order for their company to be as successful as possible. To assure they are running a conflict free environment and are promoting positive outcomes for their business and employee’s, it is important that they are able to understand how diversity can affect their company. Many times employees in a company will follow the lead of others when it comes to how to act. When they see people starting to profit from acting in an unethical manner, this encourages them to act the same way. When this happens, the rate at which the company works together efficiently will then decrease, damaging the overall business of the company. People who behave unethically put their reputation on the line and it may cause many problems for them further down the line. The unethical behavior of managers can cause a domino effect and lead to employees acting unethical and then damaging their relationships with customers. Many times in the workplace, people find themselves at a loss for what to do in certain situations. This can relate to the ethical dilemma principle which is defined as “the quandary people find themselves in when they have to decide if they should act in a way that might help another person or group and is the right thing to do, even though it might go against their own self-interest” (Jones, George 78). Diversity is a very important issue that needs to be understood in a company for many reasons. On reason is that there is a very strong demand for diverse people in a workplace and they all must receive equal opportunities. Unfair treatment of any person is illegal. Another reason is that having a more diverse management panel in a company, improves organizational effectiveness. There are many different types of ways in which one can discriminate against someone else. Age, gender, religion, race, sexual orientation, and disabilities are all major diversity issues that come up on an everyday basis, especially in the workplace. Age becomes a topic of discrimination a lot, because many times, employees are looking for someone who may be the most experienced in say the new technology, so most likely a younger person out of school would know more about that new technology then someone who is older and has been out of practice for many of years. Even though the equality of men and women in the United States has somewhat evened out, women still tend to make a little bit less money in the workplace then men which can cause problems with the diversity and equality in gender. To this day there are just some jobs where it it almost completely stereotypical for just men or just women to be working certain jobs which could sway a person in charge of hiring a new employee to hire a man over a women if everyone else staffed is a man.
