As a person who has worked since the age of 16, continuously without very many breaks in between, it can be easy to feel burned out after a while. Typically, Americans are allowed a two-week vacation after 1 year, and any time after 25 years, up to 5 weeks. This can indicate that the majority of Americans spends a substantial amount of time at work, as opposed to being with their family, or having time to themselves, thus aiding in a stressful lifestyle. For example, it has been stated that “people continually exposed to high levels of stress in their jobs may pay a price in their well-being (Etzion, 2003, p. 214). When this happens, there is a possibility that the individual will be unenthusiastic about going to their place of employment, and only going due their financial responsibilities There is also a chance that the employee may want to pursue a career elsewhere, which can be bad for business if the worker is considered as valuable. In my place of employment, …show more content…
The qualifications will be based on one’s performance, time with the company, and more importantly, need-based. According to Etizion (2003), vacations improve the quality of one’s personal life and an employee’s job performance. If the employee who believes they are in need more time away from work due to feeling burned out or overworked, permitting them to purchase additional vacation time can aid in their performance and involvement with their company. Paying for more vacation time will be based how much money is contributed to their employee spending account. This is different from regular vacation time where one is automatically paid for their 2-3 weeks of PTO time per year. Instead, my solution is to offer a need-based break at one’s will, and that is paid for by the employee. I believe this solution upholds ethical standards because it can allow the company to consider the worker’s well-being and
The American work ethic is something our country should be proud of. Since the days of George Washington Americans have worked hard for what they believe in, what they need, and what they want. It is our right as Americans to be able to work for these ideals. Without out a strong work ethic our country would crumble. From businessmen to politicians a strong work ethic is necessary to keep our country financially and politically stable.
At some point, the more time one spends working, the less productive they become, as Delistraty states. Delistraty tells us that the French are required to take at least 30 days off each year. This should not just be mandatory for French workers, but for every full-time worker. Too many people in our culture overwork causing them to miss out on important milestones in their loved ones’ lives. Working over 50 hours a week not only stresses one’s body but also limits time spent with friends and family, which is one of my top priorities. Delistraty mentions Menlo Innovations and how they see people who work overtime as “inefficient workers, not dedicated.” I think that every company should view overtime this way, they recognize that overwork is inefficient. If companies have this mentality it might help people to focus more on themselves and not neglect their physical and psychological health and lead them to more efficient work. The motivation for employees to work hard, and overwork, is to allow themselves a comfortable retirement as Delistraty states. By overworking, people tend to miss out on milestones and important events, in their lives and family. As Delistraty tells us, people “are too busy fitting their lives into work, rather than fitting work into their lives”
3/4 of Americans say they have experienced nerve wracking moments of stress at work. People who have retired to a stressful job after recovering from an heart attack are more likely to have another one compare to people who haven’t had one. The most stressful jobs are: intercity teachers, police officers, miners, and air traffic control officers. Some home stressors are arguing with their spouse and women who don’t speak their minds are 4 times more likely to die than those who do.
... then this is a culture difference between Mr. Higashi and the employee. However, if Kelly had intended on using the vacation for vacation and sick leave for sick leave then that means there is no vacation time allowed for Kelly to use for this vacation. The compromise would be that Mr. Higashi and Kelly would agree to use one day of sick leave and one day of vacation time off. This strategy would allow both parties to win to some degree and at the same time be able to keep an agreeable relationship between the two parties.
If the health of employees can help or hinder a company, then why do companies still have sick days? With the “on the go” lifestyles, how can we not question the health of employees and their families. Today we have high stress jobs, rush hour traffic, and demanding schedules. Being healthy and fit is the way to conquer tomorrow.
In chapter two, Tirado says, “you have no legal right to take breaks in America” (p. 18). She was working like many other minimum wage jobs, in harsh and dangerous conditions because her employer did not care about her safety. I would feel worn out and concerned for my safety if I had to constantly worry about grease burns or heat strokes or whatever the case might

There are thousands of things I love, but vacation is on the number one list. Many times over the years I have taken vacation time; It was only a while back, when I realized how amaz-ing, and the great value it gives the sole and body. There have been times when I felt not wanting to leave my work, whether it’s financial problems or among other things. Other times I thought my work was at a decisive juncture and it wouldn 't get accomplished without me. All profession-als or employees know that the money does not just make itself unless they are there to make sure everything is going according to their policy. I know I am not alone in making excuses not to take a vacation. When I asked a couple of my co-workers, they also agreed on not even taking a week off for the entire year, some even included holidays.
In conclusion, workers should balancing theirs relax time and work time unless employee cannot avoid stress. Everyday, there are workers who come home from their jobs with a high amount of health issues. In the article, “Roses underneath Paris” Murat (n.d) writes that “In matters of healing the body or the mind, vacation is a true genius!” A vacation is supposed to be an entertaining and soothing break from a daily routine. However, a poorly planned vacation can end up being a major headache. Vacations is an escape many people look forward to all year. Working adults spend days and months of hard work. Summer vacation is legendary. An integral part of American culture, it is loved by students and loathed by parents. Its influence stretches as far as the economy and media of the country. Nevertheless, such a famed part of American educational customs is unnecessary and even detrimental to students. Its institution hinders learning and it can have a damaging effect on the families and students involved.
