The Nimiipuu Indian tribe is one of the better known plateau groups in the central plateau of the northwestern region of the United States. These native Indians who are also called the Nez Perce reside in the Washington, Oregon and Idaho region. They live mostly along the central portion of the Bitterroot Mountains, along the Snake River drainage and several major valleys such as Clearwater Valley. The climate of this plateau territory varies widely between the mountains and valleys. Most of the area is mountainous even though there are two major valleys in the center of Nimiipuu country and also deep canyons that cut throughout the territory. Just before the arrival of the Europeans, the Nimiipuu acquired horses which they used to travel around in the Plains. They adopted many Plains customs and habits. They too began to live in tipis and hunt bison. As a result of this transformation, the earlier Europeans mistook them for the Plains people. The Americans were the first to have some type of contact with the Nimiipuu then soon after, they were in contact with fur traders from both American and British companies. They developed very friendly relationship with these foreign traders and accepted them in their society. However, these foreigners soon became a menace to the Nimiipuu. Christian missionaries tried to convert them, then the British ceded the region to the United States and they came under American control. As Americans flooded the region, friction arose among the Americans and the Nimiipuu. But then in the 1850’s the United States government began to sign treaties with the Nimiipuu forcing them to move to Indian reservations. One of these reservations was given to the Nez Perce after the signing of the Walla Walla Council Treaty but not long after gold was discovered on the land and before you knew it, white miners were encroaching on the …show more content…
