The published review I read was John Green’s review about the novel The Book Thief in the New York Times newspaper. Green did a well job on the review of the novel and gave some positive elements of the novel such as style of writing and characterization. Green recommended the novel and I agree with his decision for the many reasons. Green talked about the authors amazing style of writing, the author of The Book Thief is Markus Zusak. I agree with his review due to the fact that Zusak used descriptive words that created brilliant passages which allows the readers to visualize what is occurring in the novel. Many authors do not have this creative ability to attract a reader’s perspective in the novel. “People observe the colors of a day only …show more content…
I agree with Green when he says this because there are many depressing situations that occur in the novel such as death, injuries, being abandoned, etc. In my opinion I do not think that teen readers can cope with many depressing situations because teenagers nowadays are not able to handle topics such as death or being abandoned. Another reason why this book is not for teenagers is because the beginning of the novel is slow. Many teens are not patient nowadays which results in not continuing to read the novel or get a big picture of the novel. Even just by looking at the size of the novel they would not choose to read it. Another point why this novel is not suitable for teenagers is because it shows reality to the readers by showing that not everyone is a winner. An example that occurred in the novel where this happened was in the very end of the novel when Death (narrator) states, “I’m haunted by humans” (Zusak, 550). This is an example of losing in the novel because in the beginning of the novel Death was always confident even when he failed to take souls although in the end, he lost hope because of human nature and how they love to destroy objects. This proves that the novel is not suitable for teenagers because in the end the book shows that not everyone wins and that life can be
Being said so, parts in the book where violence such as wolf attacks, gunshots, and potential homicide is clearly depicted through simple yet powerful vocabulary. The book also contains parts about kissing and a sexual act which was depicted through a fade-to-black style. Although the book contains such scenes, the depth of the words that were used to elaborate a particular scene was not too strong and was in fact in a moderate level. The book can therefore still be suitable for young readers. At the same time, the characters within the book are also of the same age range which made it easy to understand and relate to the story as it progresses and
In conclusion, this book should not be banned. Many readers of this book would agree that this book should be read by teenagers. It shows how far teenagers will go to get drugs, the consequences of drugs, and how life is like once you are hooked onto drugs. This is a book that many teenagers should read before getting involved in any type of substances. This can teach many teens what to do when situations like this arise. They will know the consequences and will know what to expect. How real this book portrays all the events teens can decide not to try anything because in a way they slightly experienced everything with Alice. Overall the book should not be banned and teens should be allowed to read this any where without there being consequences.
Certainly this book is written for adults. The authour uses profanity and racial remarks, but it is necessary to tell the story in that manner. The bad language used by the characters shows their hate and anger, but also shows that some are willing to change their ways.
In the novel Steinbeck uses profanity which may be inappropriate for high school students. There’s drinking, smoking, swearing, and extramarital sex. There are many high school students who may not be ready to read a novel with that much profanity. In the novel it talks about the preacher and how he would rape women. That’s one thing that I strongly disagree with the content being in a novel for high
After hearing a brief description of the story you might think that there aren’t many good things about they story. However, this is false, there are many good things in this book that makes it a good read. First being that it is a very intriguing book. This is good for teenage readers because often times they don’t willingly want to read, and this story will force the teenage or any reader to continue the book and continue reading the series. Secondly, this is a “good” book because it has a good balance of violence. This is a good thing because it provides readers with an exciting read. We hear and even see violence in our everyday life and I believe that it is something teenagers should be exposed to. This book gives children an insig...
Having literature that can speak to your situation in life is what young adults need in their books. In Donna’s Norton Through the Eyes of a Child she lists seven characteristics of a good young adult novel and some of them are,“written from the viewpoint of an of young people, main characters must overcome their problem without help from the parent, deal with emotional problem of young adults and have fast paced storyline” (Norton, 2007). The Fault in Our Stars executed theses things perfectly. It is told from the perspective of a sixteen year old girl, living with cancer, but still going through what most sixteen year old’s go through, She has parents who do not understand her life and what she is going through so they cannot actually help her with her problems and she falls in love for the first time and experienced a tragic heartbreak. The story goes on how life does for a teenager, everything is happening fast and very out of their control, and they must live as best as they can with the circumstances of their life. John Green wrote more than just a teen cancer book, he told the experiences of not having any control in your teen years by using
“I am haunted by humans” (Zusak 550). The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is about the horrors of World War II. Liesel and her family help out an old friend by hiding a Jew. Liesel also steals her first book when she at her brother’s funeral. Liesel Meminger’s remarkable actions like feeling good when she steals a book and her family hiding a Jew help demonstrate why Death is “haunted by humans”.
Originally the novel was for adults, but teenagers connected to the story as well because of Holden’s resistance to adulthood. It teaches both groups that people develop at a different time. Parents should not be forcing their kids to grow up, get a job, and move out; and kids need to understand growing up is a part of life. Sometimes it is easy to feel like you are alone, but everyone goes through periods of frustration pertaining to who they
In The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak, beauty and brutality is seen in many of the characters. Rudy, Liesel, and Rosa display examples of beauty and brutality often without realizing what exactly they are doing, because it is a part of their human nature. Zusak not only uses his characters, but also the setting of the novel in Nazi Germany to allude to his theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature. The time in which the novel is set, during World War II, displays great examples of beauty and brutality, such as the mistreatment of the Jews. As a result of this time period, the characters have to go through troubling times, which reveals their beautiful and brutal nature in certain circumstances. Zusak uses his characters and their experiences to demonstrate the theme of the beauty and brutality of human nature in the novel.
In conclusion, I would highly recommend this book to early teens who are fans of drama and comedy because they could probably relate to most of the issues discussed to a certain extent. Girls my age, especially, would enjoy this book as they could relate to the issues discussed and they have probably already experienced similar
The second and last factor is that the book is written in a clear and straightforward prose. The story is easy to read and follow, thus it is read by teenagers and adults of all ages. In fact, the book is recommended for reading in high schools, from 7th grade to 12th grade students (Distribuidora Lewis 2016).
Sometimes, the juveniles of the nation do not know where to turn. They lose all faith in humanity and themselves. The point of young adult literature is to provide hope for those in distress, to give them something to escape to when everything crumbles around them. The youth of America have been given the freedom to do what they please, and each generation has defined that freedom. The true American experience will never be set in stone, because it changes all the time.
As time evolves, so do the words that are essential for our everyday survival. The most obvious difference between humans and animals is our ability to master the art of speech. Often, people will say the “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me”, a simple nursery rhyme that helps ease a bullied child from abusive words and taunts. But does that really help cure the emotional pain? Words can illuminate and motivate the minds of people but can also shadow their self-esteem through psychological trauma. In The Book Thief, we see how fundamental words were to shape the reality of millions of people caught in the fire of World War II.
Teen novels have shorter, snappy and simple sentences, smaller paragraphs, and its descriptions are limited mostly to characters’ appearances. The story is also generally driven through dialogue, such as in Divergent: ““What rank were you?” Peter asks Four. I don’t expect Four to answer, but he looks levelly at Peter and says, “I was first.” This is because teen dystopian novels tend to examine how a group and relationships change, rather than the individual characters - and a good way for the writer to show this is through dialogue and character interaction. Hence I have included this in exitSim, ““Could be the white light of death - come back.” Cloud shouted, an obvious sense of urgency in his voice. “Alex, come back!” Destiny called.” Additionally, sentences are shorter and paragraphs are smaller because there is less descriptive content in teen dystopian novels; teenagers appreciate and enjoy action more, and can get bored reading long, descriptive
Adults should be comfortable reading young adult literature. The different types of books you read can say a lot about who you are and the struggles you have in your daily life. Many adults read Young adult literature which is written for teenagers between the ages of 12-18. Adults should be comfortable reading young adult literature it shows that they find themselves relating to the main character and understanding their struggles. Every adult at one point was 15 or 16 years old dealing with the same problems, and they find comfort in reading these types of books which helping them find the light at the end of the tunnel.
