One of the most dangerous effects of sleep deprivation is on a person’s physical health. Until recently, only minor effects were reported regarding sleep deprivation effects on the body. In a study conducted by the American Cancer Society, they found that an increased morality rate was linked with short sleep durations in patients (Gardner 2016). Researchers have also found that sleep deprivation caused a thirty-three percent increased risk of developing diabetes. Sleep loss was linked to diabetes risk factors which include insulin resistance, increased eating habits, and weight gain. (Gardner 2016). The main thing that people can do to help themselves become less sleep deprived is to sleep. When someone is already sleep deprived, it is important to allow the body time to recover. This means that people need to catch up their sleep in order to make up for sleep. When the body is recovering from sleep deprivation, the sleep cycle becomes more intense and efficient. There is not an exact time for how long recovery sleep is supposed to last so it goes as long as the sleep deprived person desires. Fortunately, recovering from sleep deprivation can happen quickly and completely. (Moorcroft 37) For many people, simply sleeping for their allotted time may seem like a daunting task; however, there are tips and tricks that people can do to sleep better, longer, and help restore the sleep they had previously lost. Surprisingly, the main issues many people face when not getting enough sleep, is not falling asleep at the right time. Today, people have so many distractions that it can be hard to go sleep right when people lay down in bed. Researchers say that people should not have any devices in their bedroom, and especially with them before they go to sleep. This includes, phones, laptops, and televisions. The light from the screens can actually disrupt sleep, and distract the brain from the natural sleep process (Johnson 55). Another important solution is to avoid caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol before going to bed. These substances are linked to stimulating the mind and body rather than helping it calm down. They can cause someone to fall asleep later or have insufficient amount of sleep during the night. Moreover, some people can’t fall asleep because their mind is constantly racing.
