What Exactly is Ringworm?

Contrary to popular belief, ringworm isn't actually a worm. It is actually a fungus that can infect the skin, hair, and nails. Ringworm, or dermatophytosis, is highly contagious and often spreads to other pets in the household, along with humans. In humans, ringworm appears as red, circular lesions on the skin, but no as commonly in dogs and cats. In most cases ringworm will clear up by itself, but due to the extremely contagious nature of the fungus, all pet owners should be aware of both the signs and treatments for ringworm.

It may also cause dry patches of skin accompanied by loss of fur. These symptoms can range from single spots to entire bodies being engulfed in ringworm. Some cats may be considered carriers, by this i mean they carry the spores on their fur but show no outward signs of infection.
How is Ringworm Diagnosed?

A diagnosis of ringworm can be made by use of UV light. Ringworm will glow florescent green under a UV flashlight or lamp. Occasionally your vet mat need to take fungal cultures of your pets skin and fur to determine if ringworm is present. This is because some cats may show little to no outward symptoms.
How is Ringworm Treated?

There are many different types of treatments out there. There are both prescribed medicines and over the counter medications. Specialized over the counter medications for ringworm and other fungal infections have been shown to reduce the time needed to heal. In some cases oral medications may be needed. Always consult you veterinarian or doctor before trying any form of treatment, including over the counter medications.
