The film poster of Percy Jackson y el mar de los monstruos, is for a movie directed by Thor Freudenthal in 2013. The purpose of this advertisement is to persuade viewers to watch the movie. The target audience is teenagers and young adults as they can relate closer to the characters because they are around the same age. Visual codes that are in this advertisement include aspects of Greek mythology, colours and symbolism and a representation of gender. The representation of gender is creating a focus towards the male figures in the poster. The colours in the poster is a triadic colour combination; blue, red and yellow. Greek mythology is a combined collection of Gods, demigods, and beasts. In this advertisement there are three references to Greek Mythology. The first is the Hippocampus at the bottom of the poster. The Hippocampus is like a seahorse and is very graceful and sometimes mischievous. The second reference is Poseidon’s staff near the handle of the sword. Poseidon is the God of the Sea. Seeing as Percy is holding the sword, we presume that he is related to Poseidon. The third reference is the Cyclops to the right of Percy. In Greek mythology, cyclopes are thought of as an evil beast who are violent and dangerous. But seeing as Tyson is to the right of Percy, it shows that he may be a good guy. You can see that all male figures are in the top half of the advertisement and the females are below. The size of Tyson and Clarisse are the same which shows that they are new to the film but still, Tyson is above the Clarisse and Annabeth.
