Leadership manifests itself in many ways. The most obvious way is as student council president, "Captain Avon", captain of a team or a president of a club. Less obvious attributes of leadership are inspiring others through action, one on one encouragement and sometimes supporting others to shine in a more prominent and public way while taking a back seat. I aspire to be a more visible leader.
My name is Hunter Marshall, I am a sophomore and have been looking forward to applying for the Woodwell Leadership Award since Kevin Sieber won last year. Knowing Kevin, before and after his Outward Bound experience and hearing from him , I know I would personally benefit from the program and be able to make more of a contribution to the Avon Old Farms …show more content…

One thing that resonated with me, was their promise "It will not be easy, but it will be worth it". I am a guy who loves a challenge academically and athletically. I know the Outward Bound experience, combining challenges in nature with teamwork and self-preservation will help me enhance my own abilities to become a more outspoken and public leader. Soccer is my main passion. As a freshman I thought I came to AOF understanding what it took to be a varsity player, but I was wrong. I made JV, was a starter and did get the opportunity to play up on varsity a few times as a freshman. As a JV player I was known for my hard work on the field. Some criticize me for my ruthless determination during practice pushing my teammates to be faster and better. Several times Coach Cantello invited me to the varsity practice commending me for my hard work and calling it out to the others as something they should aspire to. Our teams hard work during practice was evident on the JV field with our winning achievements with coaches and players acknowledging it was a special season. I think my contribution to the team success on the field and the comradery off the field was influenced by my can-do positive attitude. Coaches, soccer, squash, and lacrosse comment on my work ethic and my ability to challenge others through healthy competition during practice. They have seen how I support my teammates by helping them work on a skill outside of practice and how I help build up the confidence by supporting them on the field with my actions and my words my ability to dig deep and challenge myself is one way I demonstrate leadership to others. I want to learn how to improve my captain skill. By this I mean that I want to be able to talk to my teammates about anything, give them guidance, and be able to help the in a time of need
