Matthew’s Gospel was composed for the Jewish Christian sect.

Matthew utilised the the Q source, originating from the German word ‘Quelle’, meaning “source”. This was a hypothetical collection of Jesus’ sayings, supposedly shared by oral tradition between Matthew and Luke. Both gospels contain common material in similar sequence and wording, evident in the Healing of the Leper and the Calming of the Storm.

Matthew also drew upon Mark’s gospel, written around the year 60, as a base of information. He adapted many of Mark’s writings to further emphasise Jesus’ place in the Jewish faith, and adding …show more content…

Matthew created his gospel as a source of reassurance and renewal of faith for the Jews, following the First Jewish Revolt (AD 66-70).

Matthew also wrote his gospel to convince the Pharisees and Sadducees (who stubbornly denied Jesus as the Messiah) that Jesus was their promised Saviour.

In addition, Matthew includes many parables to enhance the importance and relevance of Jesus’ teachings, displayed in The Sermon on the Mount. Matthew stresses the significance of faith and obedience to Christ to live a ‘perfect’ life dedicated to God.

Matthew’s portrayal of Jesus was heavily influenced by the relationship of Jesus to both Judaism and Israel. Matthew presents Jesus as the Messiah and perfect son of Abraham and David (Mt 1:1). Matthew continually highlights the significance of Christ’s birth as God Incarnate, by “She will bear a Son… for He will save His people from their sins” (Mt 1:21).
