The President of the United States of America’s slogan is “Make America Great Again” in order to do this, people must look back at the past. America’s past is full of hard times, good times, and hopeful times, but the people would not know this without studying history. Without studying history people would never know the hope America still has. America has been through many tough times considering the wars, terrorist attacks, natural disasters, and moments like The Great Depression. Being able to go through all these hard times and still make it out should give Americans hope.
According to pbs.org throughout all the wars America has ever been apart of 1.1 million Americans were killed, almost half in the civil war alone. Just a few of these wars that America has been a part are in the following: The American Revolution, War of 1812, Mexican-American War, Navajo Wars, American Civil War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Iraq War, and the Vietnam War. The wars just named are familiar wars, America has been through many other wars that not many civilians have heard of. A terrorist attack is more than just attacking buildings; a terrorist attack can be as simple as having a bomb and affecting six people. Most civilians believe only the attacks that injure 500 people are important, but it is the people who practice with five that turn out to be the people that hurt the 500. Lyndon Johnson, the 36th president of the United States, laments “[w]e are not about to send American boys nine or ten thousand miles away from home to do what Asian boys ought to be doing for themselves” (Vietnam-Facts.info). There is a popular picture of a draft protests sign displaying the words “hell no, we won’t go.” I do believe Americans should have a right to choose to go to war or not. Many young men lost their life fighting a battle they didn’t even have faith in. Many soldiers endured personal hardships, loss of income, and leaving family behind. Most of drafted soldiers complied with the draft and served; however, many middle to high-class young men found ways to avoid combat.
Therefore, if the majority of the nation isn’t going to do anything to be proud of, why should they have the chance to do anything? Well if we are going to make young Americans serve to protect this country to keep it free from the horrors of the world, we as citizens should take notice and appreciate it and live life to its fullest potential and make something of ourselves. If people do not believe in what they are fighting for and are drafted into a war they do not want to fight, people will not fight with honor for their country. Being drafted into a war someone does not want to fight causes him or her to fight that war to escape with their life, not to earn a victory for their country. The United States intervened into Vietnam to try and stop the spread of communism into South Vietnam (HISTORY.com,. "Vietnam War History). They declared we needed a draft to help supply troops to fuel the war against communism, but in the end the result was the same. The Draft was an unneeded part of the Vietnam War. If the draft would have never been introduced less protestors to the war would have risen and more volunteers would have came forward and sent to Vietnam. When American troops were beginning to be withdrawn from Vietnam, it was not because of a lack of troops, but from a lack of support (Walpole, Andy.). The lack of support and the idea of and unwinnable war was the cause of a slow end to the terrible war efforts. To each and every person, war means something different. For some, it is against the things they believe in, but for others it is everything that they believe in. In America, the men and women have the privilege to determine whether or not they are a part of serving this country by going into: the marines, navy, national guard, air force, etc. Previous to this choice being available, they had what was called the military draft. The military draft is where men from the ages 18 to 25 years old legally have to register with Selective Services where you could potentially be chosen to go to war. As of now, the United States does not have an official language due to the diverse population. Many individuals believe that by establishing an official language, the United States is being culturally insensitive, that diversity is the key to forming America’s identity. However, establishing English as the official language would promote unity among not only American citizens but also the nation.

In 2004, the federal debt was $7.3 trillion. This rose to $10 trillion when the housing bubble burst four years later. Today it exceeds $18 trillion and is projected to approach $21 trillion by 2019. Debt is not the only the thing the United States has been dealing within the past years, such as immigration, abortion, guns, foreign policy, taxes, along with numerous other topics, yet Trump has a way to solve the unsolved and yes, “Make America Great Again.”
Dreaming is a big part of all our lives. We all dream to someday do something with our lives. For this reason many people come to America to be better off than they were in their native countries. The American dream is the hope people have coming to America. They hope to be wealthy. They hope for no more struggling. The American dream is well and alive in this day and age and will always be because people will always have the hunger to prosper. The American dream cannot be reached without hope and without hope all is lost.
Every American is Free, and because of many others, are safe. They are able to lay their head down on a pillow and go to sleep knowing that they aren’t going to be shot by soldiers of a different country in their sleep. They don’t have to hide inside their houses and watch fighter vehicles crawl by and wonder if they are going to live to see the sun rise the next day. They are safe because there are men and women over in different countries killing those that threaten our existence. If there was ever a debate about reinstating the draft, I think the answer would be yes, do it because there would be that many more people fighting to keep us safe, those that maybe debated it before would go through with it, and the troubled teens that rebel against
Being an American is more than just living in America, or being born in this country. Many people talk about being American’s and they aren't even in this country. Being an American is a way of life that people adapt into by seeing how we act. People all over the world eat the same things that we eat, so that can't really be a way of being an American. To me, being an American is embracing our ways of life, not fighting for the other guys, and loving our anthem and the flag.
Generally, reinstating the Constitutional draft would solidify the meaning of being an American citizen. Often, wealthier and more privileged people are able to ask for exemption from serving, which makes representation of soldiers in combat composed of less-privileged citizens. With compulsory conscription, all American citizens, men or women, ages 18-26 are subject to be recruited for the armed forces. The conflicts that many people have concurred have shown that giving up is never the answer. For example, the quote “Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us” (Johnson) captures how no matter what the past holds, the future is what the focus should be. The past holds many of the answers for this country to succeed in the years to come. “We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered” (Johnson) has a very strong meaning for everyone who lives within the United States. For example, this country has succeeded in appointing an African American as president. For all the people’s whose ancestors have suffered pain this has been one of the great American dreams to ever be accomplished. “O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. Alexis de Tocqueville and Langston Hughes both have their own ideas about what America is, was, and should be. Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America praises American democracy in which everyone is included. This inclusion allows for democracy that everyone can be a part of and feel like they are contributing. On the contrary, Langston Hughes’s “Let America Be America Again” depicts an excluding America that does not treat everyone equivalently. Hughes portrays America as a misrepresentation that does not uphold the ideals that it is so famous for. The two works contrast in many ways but do have some similarities. Although their ideas are different, politics is still a choice. Tocqueville describes politics as a choice that everyone should make as it benefits them all while Hughes describes politics as a choice that some do not have the power to take part in. What does it mean to be an American? To me, what it means to be American is to Pledge Allegiance to your country, to proudly boast that you live in a country that has a justification for existence, to be given opportunity. Although there are many definitions of what it means to be an American, does being an American really just mean being successful in society? The point of this essay is to describe the different meanings and my feelings of what it is to be “American”.
