Since the very first steps taken on American soil people have dreamt of pursuing the American dream. What is the American dream? Many people believe that the American dream shouldn’t be defined in one simple sentence. To some people the American dream means getting a new car and to others a new home, but for many Americans it has a deeper meaning. As we have seen equality has been a struggle from the beginning; but it has led to liberty in other places. The accomplishments that are found today within the United States did not come without struggles. For example, the line of a song by Francis Scott Key, “The rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air” demonstrates how this country has fought to keep its main value: liberty. The conflicts that many people have concurred have shown that giving up is never the answer. For example, the quote “Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us” (Johnson) captures how no matter what the past holds, the future is what the focus should be. The past holds many of the answers for this country to succeed in the years to come. “We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered” (Johnson) has a very strong meaning for everyone who lives within the United States. For example, this country has succeeded in appointing an African American as president. For all the people’s whose ancestors have suffered pain this has been one of the great American dreams to ever be accomplished. “O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. (Key)” this quote will always serve as a motto for everyone to always remember where this country started. It also shows that without all the soldiers who have fought for our freedom this country would not be free.
