To begin, as technology continues to advance the criminal justice system adjusts to using the internet or technology in many different ways. In particular for fighting cyber-crime or tracking sexual predators using social media websites, police blotter blogs, and stakeout or monitor gangs. With social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram becoming more popular within our society the need for criminal justice agencies utilizing the internet or social media in combating crime has grown as well. According to the National Institute of Justice, “now essential to modern life, computers and other Internet-connected devices have also become increasingly important to criminals, who steal information, commit fraud and stalk victims online.” …show more content…

Police officers can use social media to help solve crimes. Since we live in a world where we document everything, and constantly have to update our social media posts, police can use this updates to piece together crimes. I have seen suspects get arrested because they have posted pictures of themselves posing with guns and they are convicted felons. When you are a convicted felon, you cannot be in possession of a firearm. I have seen defendants post pictures of themselves with cars that they have stolen or pictures of themselves smoking weed. Police officers were able to use this information to help solve the particular crime. Not only is the internet useful to track down sexual predators and people in human trafficking rings but it also helps criminal justice agencies to monitor gang activity via social media, people posting pictures of drugs or sometimes even posting things about their involvement in criminal behavior. For example, just a week ago the FBI arrested a young man on possession of a firearm charges after they found multiple posts on his Facebook page. The creation of the internet has come so far and has so much more to help achieve. There is some battles lost with its creation but the benefits outweigh the negatives when we look at how far we've come since 1960 and how much further we will travel with this
