The college sports industry produces around 11 billion dollars in annual revenues. Sounds like there’s enough money to pay college students, right? Wrong. In my opinion, college athletes should not be paid for playing sports in college- it’s unfair, unnecessary, and there’s just no good justification. Why? Well, there are several reasons I believe this, and why you should too. First of all, colleges don’t have any actual obligation to pay college students. As stated in Document 2, line 12, students aren’t exactly being forced to play sports- there’s no exploitation. Many students jump in when offered tuition, and room and board. At any time they like, they can leave and become a normal student- going back to paying tuition just like everyone else. …show more content…

The problem with this is that this is the coach's job- but it isn’t the job of the college student. While it would be understandable if there was nothing being given to the students for playing the sport- but there is. Playing sports in college is not a job, it’s part of going to that school. Because overall, you are not an athlete-student, you’re a student-athlete, and sports is just a part of college- not an employment. And while coaches get paid, and money does come in from the games, it goes to funding the school sports program. So, even you don’t directly get paid money, it’s still benefiting you in the end. This is another valid reason why I believe that college student-athletes should not be paid. Overall, I believe that student-athletes in colleges are being given enough as it is, without being paid extra for playing their sports. Their tuition is often already paid, as is their room and board, it it would be unfair to the other students to pay them for something that isn’t even a job.
