The Dangers of Artificial Intelligence “When the world ends, it may not be by fire or ice or an evil robot overlord. Our demise may come at the hands of a superintelligence that just wants more paper clips.” When you hear the term Artificial Intelligence, what is the first thing to come to your mind? Perhaps the Disney movie Smart House? Or maybe you think of a dystopian future of human-like robots taking over the world. Artificial Intelligence is around us in our everyday lives. But the future of AI technology triggers fears in many people, including scientists. Although artificial intelligence serves its purpose of helpfulness, it poses a threat to humanity as it continues to develop and revolutionize. Sure, people were still to aid the process along and to ensure the machines did not malfunction. But, most of the work was completed by the artificial intelligence. And today, machines take over many jobs that used to be fulfilled by people. For example, the signs that greeted you on the sidewalk were originally waved by people. Today, company’s will use electronic machines to move the sign back and forth. We also see a progression in self-checkouts, eliminating the need for cashiers. It is, in fact, true that the rise in machines completing jobs is cost efficient for the company. But, these machines are terminating possible job opportunities. There is an argument that service jobs such as transporting the elderly to necessary doctor appointments and jobs requiring heavy communication with customers, will become the “go-to” jobs for those out of a job.
