Maturity is a quality that is admirable for anyone, at any age to have. Perhaps that is because it has to be learned over time and is not something that one naturally has as a character trait. When I think of maturity, I usually think of adults who know how to conduct themselves. Adults are a symbol of maturity-- this goes back to the etymology of the word- which stems from the Latin word maturitas, maturitatis, f. In Latin, the word means ripeness, which would make sense because adults are fully developed. Although the literal meaning of maturity is within the realm of being fully developed, there is a more precise definition that would apply to the psychological and mental practice of what is maturity. Parallel to adults being mature, children are very obvious symbols of immaturity. This is because children are obviously younger, meaning they have more to learn and therefore become mature. Human nature is inherent and more prevalent in children, and human nature is motivated by self-preservation. It is not in human nature to think of others as much when the situation is either life or die. As humans become more civilized, the focus comes away from an individual sustaining oneself and he or she is able to turn their attention more outwardly and care for others. Hermann Hesse says “Youth ends when egotism does; maturity begins when one lives for others.” (Hesse, Hermann, and Adele Guggenheimer Lewisohn. Gertrude. Coyote Canyon Press, 2012.) Adults, being the mature ones, take care of their children. Through this parental love, adults get a sense of maturity once they realize that they have other lives they can care for; suddenly their own selfish wants aren’t necessarily as important, and through it, they learn selflessness. Children can be known for being selfish and impatient beings, but throughout their youth they are taught by adults to suppress their urges and habits that would cause them to be immature.If maturity is a medley of different virtues, and immaturity is the opposite of maturity, then it can be said that immaturity would be a conglomeration of different vices. Humility is also a virtue, and it is also found in maturity. Justice, selflessness, prudence, wisdom, intelligence, and fortitude are all virtues, and they are all found in maturity. All of these virtues are just good character traits and show poise, and when they are combined together they produce a mindset of maturity in one’s character. Patience is shown in maturity through being able to assess the situation and think through all feasible solutions, coming to the best conclusion on how to proceed. The humility in maturity is gracefully being able to acknowledge that one is not as important as he or she would like to place themselves to be. In maturity, one must be intelligent know what is just and unjust, and in order to act with wisdom, they must have maturity.
