Do you get bored easily with the same old-same old?

Can I trust you with my secret for never getting bored with your workout routine, even when it's as often as 5 days a week?

I began with aerobics and spent years moving on to each new healthy workout.

In college, the girls in my sorority would spend countless hours jumping, squeezing and feeling the "burn" to Jane Fonda videos. We had a standard date, early in the morning where we would move the coffee table, make some room and sweat it out.

This was followed, post-college, by aerobics classes at the gym where I wore cute little leotards and colored tights. I could admire myself in the mirrored wall while following the movements of an enthusiastic instructor. And if I was lucky I'd meet …show more content…

After my first child, via an unexpected, painful, emergency C-section, I bought a step. Once again, I found myself, moving the coffee table out of the way, putting the video tape in the VCR and climbing my way to fitness. It took about a year after my son's birth to get back into my pre-baby clothes (plus 7 pounds).

Baby number two, via a less painful moderately expected C-section, I bought a slide. The slide was kind of fun. You put little nylon booties over your sneakers and slid back and forth following the video tape in the VCR. What followed was another year to fit into pre-baby clothes (plus 4 pounds).

When Oprah started running marathons, I thought, "I can do that." So I got some good running shoes and began waking ridiculously early to get a 2 1/2 mile run in before my husband left for work each morning. I read Bob Greene's book and followed Oprah's routine to better fitness. Martial Arts provides the most complete, full bodied, healthy workout on earth. While you work hard to increase your personal fitness, your brain gets a workout as well. As with any new endeavor there is a learning curve to challenge your perseverance. But beyond that, martial arts forces you to engage your brain.

Just like the very popular ballroom dancing, martial arts training requires learning a series of steps put together in an exact order. These are called forms. You begin my learning the basic techniques to ground your base. The mind gets plenty of exercise as you work to remember the next movement of your choreography all while propelling yourself to better fitness levels.

My favorite benefit of martial arts is that it is truly a family activity. Husbands, wives, sons and daughters can learn together in a non-competitive, healthy atmosphere. It's much easier to help kids get healthy if they are having fun. The boredom is busted because the routine changes for every class.
