Essay

Throughout the course of my childhood and early adulthood, I have faced several obstacles in pursuing my academic and professional goals. I grew up in rural Oromia in Ethiopia, where opportunities to pursue academics were not available. Consequently, my mother did not receive any formal education and my father was forced to leave school during his primary education due to lack of financial support. Fortunately, I was able to move in with relatives in the city as a child in order to attend school. Despite my excitement to pursue an education far beyond what most of my community was able to do, life away from home was very difficult. In order to earn my stay at my relatives’ home, I took on many responsibilities that were hard to accomplish as a child. These duties included fetching water from nearby rivers and carrying heavy loads of firewood from the forest, walking long distances to procure produce from open markets as well as hand washing and ironing all of the family members’ clothes. Often times, I had to endure hunger and exhaustion from hard labor in order to stay in school. However, from a young age, I had always deeply valued my education and was determined to excel academically and thus was able to push through the many physical and emotional obstacles in my life. Year after year, I was a top student in all of my classes and was thus able to pursue a college education. Relying on the assistance of many individuals and part-time employment, I finally became the first of all of my family to earn a college degree, graduating as the top student of the year and receiving the President’s Cup.
