Environmental Influence In Shaping My Personality

I would like to believe that the environment and the genes have equally contributed in shaping my personality. However, through this assignment, I will be able to determine which of the two options have contributed in building my personality the most or if they both have contributes equally. I was born in India and since my birth, my parents and I have traveled all around the country up until I was 15 years old. At that age, we moved to Florida and started a new life here near my mother’s sister and her family. Since my father was in Indian Air Force, we moved around every two to three years. This is an example of parents affecting “the development of children’s personalities,” (Funder, 2016, pg.315). I actually developed a fear for them and this makes sense because humans fear what they don’t understand. However, my cousins had two dogs as pets when they were little kids. Therefore, they loved animals since an early age. Three years ago, Priya brought a stray cat home and this cat, Puma, is now their family pet. The first year of Puma in the house, I was very afraid and I would make Priya put Puma in the patio whenever I visited their house. However, a year and half ago, I adopted a kitten, too. My kitten, Beau, became my responsibility in the house as my parents did not want pets in the house. As months went on, my dad started liking Beau more and more and my mom started getting less and less afraid of him. Now, they don’t even blink when Beau jumps on their lap and takes a nap. This is yet another example that shows that environment and parenting have influenced the way my personality is shaped and is still in the process of growing more as I learn new things
