Weekly Response: 3 This week I looked at three different poets, Emily Dickinson, William Wordsworth and Alfred Tennyson. Their poetry greatly varied, but all included symbolism and allegory in some form. I looked at many different books on these poets to try to figure out which poems are the most important and show a verity of writing styles. Emily Dickinson’s poetry included a lot of imagery to describe her thoughts and feelings. I found her to be especially interesting. Most of her poems do not have titles, which seems to put a high level of importance on the entire poem. When her poems are discussed they tend to be called by their first line. Throughout Dickinson’s life, she was in love many different times. She would mainly communicate with her lovers through letters, but there are some poems that she wrote about them. One poem that I found particularly interesting was called “Sexton! My Master’s sleeping here.” This poem also has some different capitalization that interested me. In this poem the words “Master,” “Bird’s,” “Early” and and “Troubadour” are all capitalized in the middle of a sentence. Dickinson’s grammar, acts as a symbol of importance, as it makes you wonder of the hidden meaning. Dickinson’s religious beliefs are also shown in her poetry. After going to Mount Holyoke Female Seminary she stepped away from the church. In her poem “Some keep the Sabbath going to Church” there reader can see Dickinson’s religious beliefs and questions. Dickinson writes “So instead of getting to Heaven, at last - I’m going, all along.” Many people died throughout her life, which greatly effected her as well as her writing. It seems as if Dickinson doubts where she will be going after death. Due to Dickinson’s poems being short I felt like I could reread them multiple times in order to have a better
