Anecdotal note When I got to the classroom Haydin was just finishing lunch fixing to lay down and take a nap. I asked her to pick out a book that she would like to read. She said here, but I do not know the words can someone read it. She picked “David goes to school”. Her mom was in the room volunteering, so she was the one that read to her. As her mom read each page Haydin would make comments. On one of the pages David was yelling in the halls Haydin said “I don’t do that”. On another page David had gum. Haydin said “No Gum at school. The next page there was a little girl and a little boy sitting at a desk and Haydin said “That’s a girl and that’s a boy we have a boy named Colten in our classroom”. “He should not do that they are trying to study”. “Emergent literacy refers to the knowledge, abilities and attitude about reading that young children acquire before the experience formal literacy instruction.” (Levey & Polirstok, 2011, p. 186) An example of this is when she was engaged in the book and paying attention to what her mother was reading and looking at the picture and interpreting them. By this observation you can also tell that Haydin is able to relate the story. At her age children “relate there personal experiences and retell stories that have been read to them”. (Levey & Polirstok, 2011, p. 188). An example of this is when she related the running in the halls back to herself and she related the boy in the story by telling her mom who the boy in her class was. Another thing that you can tell is that Haydin sentence forms continue to expand and she can talk about the world around her and she can answer WH questions when asked. Lastly Haydin was able to recognize that a group of letters have a meaning. An example of this is when she said “ I do not know that words so can someone else read
