The vocational learning outcomes set out the demonstration of learning and achievement that the student must reliably demonstrate before graduation. The elements of the performance for each outcome define and clarify the level and quality of performance necessary to meet the requirements of the vocational learning outcome. However, it is the performance of the vocational learning outcome itself on which students are evaluated. The elements of performance are indicators of the means by which the student may proceed to satisfactory performance of the vocational learning outcome. I try to assess professional skills, knowledge and personal well-being in an on-going manner and reflect on the impact of these factors on my own practice. In my first placement I noticed signs of burn-out in my supervising teacher after working in a class of troubled youth and could see that she needed some time away to do some self-care. She did take that time and came back much brighter and ready to teach the clients effectively again. In my second year placement I did not notice a lot of burn-out as the type of facility that it was, did not always have the same staff and was part-time to begin with. In my third and current year I have noticed that signs of burn out are always around me. This is most likely because it is a Child and Youth Mental Health secure unit where clients can be aggressive and are generally very ill. Most recently I witnessed staff get assaulted and there is a plan in place for staff to take time off to do self -care if something like this happens. Knowing that there are some things set in place here makes me feel good, but the fact that we as CYWs are vulnerable to that abuse or assaultive behaviour is always scary and people can burn out just from the potential of that happening day after day. I seek and use formal and informal supervision opportunities and ongoing feedback to enhance my professional growth and competence. I am required to have a supervisor during placement, so I get a mix between formal and informal supervisor. Most of the time I am quite independent in my placement settings, but for my current one I have someone with me most of the time as there is a high risk for something to happen to me as well as any other staff left alone. I enjoy getting feedback from supervisors as it shows me where they see me, it shows me if I am meeting their expectations so I know where there is room to grow and it does make me feel more comfortable in the setting. I am able to determine my current skills and knowledge through self-assessment, reflection and collaboration with peers and supervisor. I always establish reasonable, measurable and realistic personal and professional goals which enhance my work performance, I do this through placement, school, work and life itself. I always, act in accordance with professional codes of ethics and professional standards, I read policies and procedures of the different places I work/am placed at and always clarify if I need to.
