The career I chose was a Kindergarten/ Elementary School Teacher. The starting salary for this career is about $53,090. This is the median national pay. An elementary school teacher needs a minimum of one bachelor’s degree. However, many teachers study more to get a master's degree or major in a specific subject such as Math or English. Private school teachers do not need to have a degree in order to teach. Teachers also need to have a certain number of hours of student teaching as part of their degree. This would count as fieldwork credit. The future employment for teaching in Elementary Schools is projected to grow 12% from 2012- 2022. Many older teachers are expected to reach retirement which results in more jobs. Teachers must have certain attributes which fit them into a school. Some of these attributes are good communication skills, creativity, organization skills, resourcefulness, and patience. They work before, during, and after school hours and consult with other school staff, students, or parents. Many of these teachers also work outside of school in other places such as summer school or tutoring programs. Three positive aspects of teaching are that you get to help students learn and progress, only have to work during school hours, and receive tax deductibles. Three negative aspects of teaching are that you need the control and patience to deal with students with lower intellect or disruptive behavior, your teaching is based on a changing curriculum and you might have to change classes and grades which require a lot of work.
