The story that preys multiple perspectives of reality, fantasy, war, and women empowerment, El Laberinto del Fauno was a movie directed by Academy Awards winner Guillermo del Toro who is widely known for his dark-fantasy type of movies. The film was set in post-Spanish Civil War in 1944, where the story revolves around a girl named Ofelia, which is played magnificently by Ivana Baquero, who was acclaimed to be the lost Princess Moanna of the Underground Realm, who lost her memories after visiting the human world. The purpose of this paper is to criticize the format of the film specifically the title, cinematography and the characters, and how these components relate to the viewers. The title of this movie was translated from the original “El Laberinto del Fauno” to “Pan’s Labyrinth”. First, a lot of embedded meanings where inscribed within the movie. An example of this is the female uterus portrayed on the labyrinth, book, faun and fig tree which depict the pregnancy of Carmen and the cinematographic techniques used mentioned in the previous paragraph. These sights increase the usage of imagination and the critical skills of the viewer. This type of art makes the viewer not only watch the surface of the film but far deep from its context. Second, the scenes set for character building were effectively portrayed. An example of this is when Capitan Vidal ruthlessly killed and tortured the farmers and the stuttering man, which made us ballistic of Vidal’s character. There were multiple explicitly vivid scenes of torture, imperious killing, and even up-close surgery that despite its inappropriateness to kids and the reduction of targeted audience, it felt the need to exist to be able to establish the setting of the reality of a battlefield and to justify Ofelia’s eagerness to go back to the
