Within this assignment, a creative media piece is attached in order to help support the communication model that is being explored which is the Egan’s Skilled Helper Model (1998). This assignment highlights the relevancy of this model in future practice and how it is beneficial for personal and professional development. The first stage explores at reviewing the current situation that the patient is in (Egan, 2014). The principle of this stage is to allow health professionals to build a trusting relationship with the patient by interacting effectively in order for them to know what is going on in their situation using various skills to help clarify the situation (Egan, 2014). The major values of this model are the use of: respect, genuineness and client empowerment, he viewed this as ‘values that informs and drives all helping behaviour’ (Feltham and Horton, 2012). The values from Egan’s model reflects similarity with the Person-Centred Approach (1951) by Carl Rogers and its three core conditions which are: congruence, unconditional positive regard and empathy (Morrissey and Callaghan, 2011). In practice, it is about being able to interact with patients with honesty and openness (Connor and Pokora, 2012). This is ensuring that nurses do not hide behind a professional mask or uniform and ‘the ability to show oneself without putting on a façade’ (Egan, 2004).
