Social Media: Enhancing or Diminishing Communication Skills
Social media is a term used to describe a form of communication in which a group or individuals may share, interact, and express opinions online in virtual communities (Ask Writer). The impact of social media in our society has affected us greatly in both positive and negative ways. A number of research studies have recently suggested that social media is destroying our communication skills. I agree that we are losing the ability to have personal and face to face conversations and communicate ideas to others clearly. Our computer and phone screens have become a crutch to interact with others with little to no effort.
The sense anonymity that people feel typing behind their screens has created many social issues, especially for tweens and teenagers. “Recent research indicates that there are frequent online expressions of offline behaviors, such as bullying, clique-forming, and sexual experimentation, that have introduced problems such as cyberbullying, privacy issues, and ‘sexting’” (Council on Communications and Media). According to One reach, a recent study of 97% of the world population uses texting as a form of communication at least once a day. Face - to - face conversations have caused social anxiety for some. Behind the screen we feel safe and, therefore, we can say what 's on our mind without being ridiculed for our opinions. For example, A person may feel strongly about a topic that many people may not agree with, the person may not express their opinion verbally but will than express their opinion on the web because of the feeling of security they get from being behind the screen.
