The educational process allows various opportunities for students to receive good grades and excel. In order to meet these accomplishments of success, some students feel encouraged to take shortcuts. The most common shortcut that educators see some students take is cheating. Many students view cheating as a crime, while others feel cheating is necessary and cannot imagine passing their exam without the help of someone else or notes. The effects of cheating are long term, but the causes and effects of cheating vary. Cheating in schools is caused by a variety of factors and can have negative effects on the student’s success in the future. Although receiving good grades is important, cheating is not the right way to do so. Students who cheat are hurting their futures in a post-secondary education and for their career. Cheating causes the student to lose critical thinking ability, honesty, self-image and integrity, self-confidence and respect, and reputation. Without critical thinking a student will have a hard time distinguishing clear, reasonable judgements. In order to move on and expand ones education, a student must first clearly understand the basic concepts of a topic. If a student cheats during the basic lessons, he or she is setting himself up for future cheating because he or she will not understand the upper level work when the foundation is not there. Even though cheating is not acceptable, once the cheating process has begun it is hard to exterminate. Students find it easier to cheat as they continue to do it and they become more dishonest in life. Cheating ruins a student’s integrity, self-image, self-confidence, and respect. When applying for a job and the future employer sees that the student received good grades in school the student will have a difficult time living up to that potential due to the fact that he or she will not be able to solve problems, offer logical ideas, or handle the
