Incarceration and the effect of occupational deprivation on prisoners

In the community, people can make choices, take part in various occupations, and have access to services that can benefit their health both mental and physical. In the prison setting, however, participation is constricted when it comes to actively choosing. Correctional settings limit choices of inmates to keep the facility secure. By doing so, inmates are experiencing occupational deprivation which affects their mental and overall health. This paper looks at correctional settings and the impact they have on a person’s health.
