Edwin Staton was born on December 19, 1814. Edwin was born in Steubenville, Ohio. His parents were David Stanton and his wife , Lucy Norman Stanton. Edwin started professional career as attorney. He practice and impressive reputation grew in Washington, D.C. after working in Pittsburgh. He caught the attention of President James Buchanan. President James appointed Stanton to the position of attorney general.

In conclusion the election of Lincoln as president in 1860 caused a civil war because it was falsely perceived by the south that Lincoln would threaten the state’s constitutional right to slavery. This false idea was due to a rift between the northern and southern states in both an economic and ideological manner. That is the north was based on industry and generally was opposed to slavery. But the South was an agricultural society which ran on slavery and, due to Nat Turner’s Insurrection and John Brown’s stand at Harper’s Ferry, was fearful of the north’s involvement in the governing of states as well as being opposed to this on the basis of state’s rights. To what extent was the election of Abraham Lincoln the primary cause of the secession of South Carolina? I will research the events leading up to the election of 1860, and South Carolina’s views leading up to the election. In my investigation, I will research the similarities and differences in the views and motives of Abraham Lincoln about South Carolina during the time of the election in November 1860 and the secession in December 1860. My investigation will also include other factors of why South Carolina seceded from the union. For my research, I will use reliable websites on the subject and primary documents including quotes, journals, and resolutions from the South Carolina General Assembly written in 1850-1860.

The south was virtually non-existent politically or economically, and searching desperately for a way back in. Along with these things, now living amongst the population were almost four million former slaves, who had no idea how to make a living on their own.
