He explains how one must write with originality and make sure that it has an effect on the reader. Then he has to decide whether it would be best to write with incident or tone. Throughout the essay, Poe is explicit in detail, explaining his philosophy of composition (“The Philosophy” 1). Poe disliked didacticism and allegory. However, he did believe that a writer should make the meaning lie underneath the surface. He encountered many issues including drugs, alcohol, depression, and literary rivals. These issues may be a main reason why Poe’s works are very dark and depressing. One of his rivals was Henry Longfellow. He was a targeted Poe often, but he was defended by his colleagues. This rivalry went as far as becoming known as the “Longfellow War”. Not only defended by his friends, Longfellow’s work backed up his side as well. However, Poe did predict the downfall of Longfellow’s career, for it later came true (Stern, 7). In addition to these issues with rivalry, Poe also encountered issues with depression. Poe’s depression could have been caused by the mixture of all of his literary rivalry, drug and alcohol abuse, and much more. Throughout many of his poems and stories, the reader can easily identify a dark tone almost every time. For example, in his poem The Raven, the word ”Nevermore” is repeated excessively and is very symbolic because it gives off such a perfect effect on the reader that Poe aimed to achieve, a mystic yet dark tone. ”’Prophet!’ said I, ‘thing of evil! — prophet still, if bird or devil!’” This is another repeated line that gives off a dark tone that is very appealing to the effect he is trying to bring and create a burden for the reader (The Raven, 1). This dark and depressing tone is apparent in his pieces most likely due to his own depression. “After Virginia’s death from tuberculosis
Many of Poe’s stories and poems can be tied to events that have happened in his life. A lot of the hard times that he had had gone through in his life he used as motivation to write his poems and stories. For example the story “The Masque of the Red Death” is thought of to be related to the consumption (aka tuberculosis), which took the life of many of the women he loved. In “The Tell Tale Heart” the dying old man good be seen as Poe’s adoptive father on his death bed, and how the old mans eye made the murderer uncomfortable could be an analogy for how Poe’s father made him feel uncomfortable because he knew that his father did not love him.

Some of his writings were much more personal for Poe such as “The Raven” and “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Even through both poems, reflect his personal life in some way “The Raven” portrays his own personal experiences. The death of his wife was one of the most influential deaths he had to deal with. Her death led to a period of hard drinking and staying up all hours to watch over her grave, sometimes even sleeping on her grave to be closer to her. During this period of hopelessness led to the writing of “The Raven.” The poem “The Raven” is about a man and his sorrow over the death of Lenore. The raven, which may symbolize the devil, forever hunting him and a living reminder of the death of his wife. In the poem, he shows the world of his pain of having his wife taken away from him and compares death to the raven. This shows us how the raven reminds him of what he suffered after the death of his wife. The Raven” gives us an idea of what Poe was dealing with during this time of depression. Poe knew this direct and individual experience well, unlike his other works. “The Raven” was a more personal experience to Poe because it talked about something that touched him deeply and affected his. “The Raven” was a poem about his own actual life. Usually when people think of him, mind images of premature burials, murders, madmen, and mysterious women who are taken back from pure death like some zombie-like creatures comes to mind. An eerie feeling comes to mind when you hear the name Poe. The detail that he puts in his works are so realistic that you think he would be serving multiple life sentences in a maximum security prison. Some of his works include, the Raven and the Tell Tale Heart. The football team named the Baltimore Ravens adopted the name to instill a sense of fear into their opponents as he instilled in his readers. Edgar Allan Poe’s writing style has been attempted by many, but no one has ever paralleled him due to the fact that he had serious issues like being a major drug addict and his family was very nonexistent and abusive.
The life of Edgar Allan Poe, was stuffed with tragedies that all affected his art. From the very start of his writing career, he adored writing poems for the ladies in his life. When he reached adulthood and came to the realization of how harsh life could be, his writing grew to be darker and more disturbing, possibly as a result of his intense experimenting with opium and alcohol. His stories continue to be some of the most frightening stories ever composed, because of this, some have considered this to be the reason behind these themes. Many historians and literature enthusiasts have presumed his volatile love life as the source while others have credited it to his substance abuse. The influence of his one-of-a-kind writing is more than likely a combination of both theories; but the main factor is the death of many of his loved ones and the abuse which he endured. This, not surprisingly, darkened his perspective considerably.
Poe went through many hardships during his life that helped inspire his literary works. Many of his works seem pretty normal at first but then you realize there is an underlying tone of tragedy in his works, just like in his life. Many of his poems are inspired by his friends, family and real life experiences. This supports my thesis because it shows that the people and experiences in his life influenced his choices, his works and his outlook on things.
One of the other literary devices that Poe focuses on is personification. Personification is used to give a life like description of an object. Personification is one of the literary devices that bring his writings to life. For instance, “…weighty rod of brass, and the whole hissed as it swung through the air.” (The Pit and the Pendulum) is a great example. Anadiplosis, bomphiologia, chronographia and enargia greatly influence Poe’s writing style. Poe uses these and many other types of literary devices to bring his writing to life. Using the imagination he was able to create theses works of true art. Poe made his stories so eloquent that you had to use your mind to read them, which made them popular in America. Even today, scholars still read his work and try to understand the mind of Poe. (Poe)
In the article entitled, "Poe’s Calling Card," it says that, “when the poem you are reading features death (especially deceased women), an elaborate rhyme, and mournful language … you’re dealing with Poe.” Stating that Poe enjoys writing stories of depressed men … pining for the women who have abandoned them by dying.” Pointing out that this method is his calling card and he tries to inflict feelings of depression upon the reader. Edgar Allan Poe?s ?The Raven? is a dark reflection on lost love, death, and loss of hope. The poem examines the emotions of a young man who has lost his lover to death and who tries unsuccessfully to distract himself from his sadness through books. Books, however, prove to be of little help, as his night becomes a nightmare and his solitude is shattered by a single visitor, the raven. Through this poem, Poe uses symbolism, imagery and tone, as well as a variety of poetic elements to enforce his theme of sadness and death of the one he loves.
Poe's poem starts off by his emphasising of how he feels writes of his sorrowness and his sense of being different from the rest. As many people knew, Poe had never really lived a normal life, both his parents died before he turned three, his stepfather had never treated him well, and his beloved wife Victoria, died so young. In the first three lines of the poem, "From childhoods hour I have not been; As others were, I have not been; As others saw, I could not bring;" Poe writes of how as a child he had never actually experienced his childhood because he was so different then everyone else, he never lived a normal life as everyone else, he had seen how everyone else lived a normal life and lived happily, but could not match his own. He sees everyone else happy but could never feel that sense of happiness in himself, and he never fit in wherever he went. Also, in the next two lines, "My passions from a common spring; from the same source I have not taken;" Poe writes of how everyone seeks to feel joy and happiness, and he wants to feel that same emotion, but he cannot, the spring symbolizes the source of happiness, everyone has drank from that source, the happiness that is, ...
