Using technology such as the web to create a rich learning environment may not be as easy as it seems. While we try to instill lifelong learning in our students we as teachers need to remember trying new technology may take some learning on teachers’ parts as well. Research shows both sides of web-based learning, resources to facilitate online learning, and ways to develop educational software for online learning, which teachers may need to discover in order to effectively use web-based learning.
A study in Taiwan challenged the traditional ideas of education when only teachers teach and only students learn. In this study researchers found that not only can teachers teach on the web, but any user can share information with other users, the same way a teacher might. Results from this study found that people who teach excellently on the web are not necessarily accredited teachers (Chan, 2002). At some times web users are both teaching others and learning from others. This study also found that teaching online varies greatly from teaching in the classroom. Some issues discussed were the quality control and standards for learning environments and the fact that not all instructional outcomes can be met by Internet learning (Chan, 2002). Researchers also pointed out an array of challenges faced when teaching on the Internet and characteristics of online teachers. Some characteristics include the most obvious of being comfortable using the computer and Internet, also the enjoyment of sharing ideas and thoughts with other people, self-motivated and self-disciplined. ...n along with their students about the new technology, not only are our students lifelong learners, they and we need to be lifelong teachers. At some point teachers may need to allow their students to teach them a thing or two as they might know more in one area of technology than their teacher.

This article discusses the use of the Internet in the classroom and how it can be used to personalize education. The effectiveness of the Internet in the classroom is evaluated at the Henry Hudson Regional School in Highlands, New Jersey. A faculty member at the school explains that the Internet was introduced to their classrooms to expand limited electives, advanced placement, and foreign language offerings. A qualitative approach was adopted involving two principal data collection methods; a thorough and systematic review literature and in-depth interviews on critical pedagogical approaches, technologies supporting those pedagogies and management of learning resources with e-learning providers. Reasons for adopting detailed interviews are as follows: First, interviews are appropriate to examine the extent to which the critical factors identified from literature and empirical studies are practiced. Accordingly, it was deemed that interviews are particularly suitable for understanding versatile beliefs and practices of individual e-learning stakeholder in assessing what works the best (or worst) to enhance e-learning effectiveness. Second, e-learning ecosystem is a complex system, which requires acceptance and adaptation by e-learning providers. For this reason, evaluating the perceptions of staff involved in e-learning environment is necessary to identify the critical factors facilitating or impeding e-learning success. Third, sustainability of e-learning success requires the three components of e-learning ecosystem to function as a unit mutually benefitting each other. To fully understand the interaction between these components, interview method was considered to be effective. Fourth, this research is intended to develop and test the research model with a wider audience as a follow up research. This again requires identification of multiple views and concrete factors contributing to success of e-learning ecosystem. Internet access in schools has experienced an extreme increase within the last decade. By the fall of the year 2000, 98% of the public schools throughout the United States reported to be connected to the Internet (NCES, 2000). This is a reported 63% increase since the year 1994. Also in 2000, the ratio of computers to students was one to six, an increase from the 1994 ratio of one computer for every eleven students (Mendels, 1999). Aside from having Internet access in school libraries and computer labs, the abundance in individual classrooms has dramatically increased. This allows for Internet learning to be more readily available to students on a daily basis. Statistically over 70% of schools have this access in at least one of their classrooms (Mendels, 1999).
Digital learning is defined as learning through digital devices such as computers, tablets, or smart phones over the Internet. It is also known by other names, such as virtual learning, online learning, e-learning, distance learning, or continuing education. Digital learning was first introduced as “Computer Assisted Learning Center” in 1982 [1]. The first online course was introduced by “Computer Assisted Learning Campus” in 1994, in which students can take courses over the web [1]. Michael Chasen and Matthew Pittinsky founded Blackboard in 1997. In 1999, Blackboard, SmartThinking and e-campus became popular among different universities around the world. Between 2002 and 2008, there was an increase in students taking online courses by 187% [2]. In the year 2009, total number of students who were taking web-based curriculum was 5.5 million [2]. This statistic shows that the online learning trend is on the rise each day.
Abstract: Recently, there has been a rush to create web-based instructional courses. The approach that is being taken to create web-based courses is to create websites that will function as the central distributors of information and materials. Based on the format and content of the course, the student is to go through lesson by lesson to complete courses. In this paper, I address some of the problems inherent in this approach, especially with respect to 18-22 year-old undergraduate education.
