A child that is having a problem reading even after lots of help from both parents and teachers can be traumatic for both the parents and the child. At some point, the parents probably start to think that the child is just being lazy and not trying to read. It may not be the child, school or the parents fault the child may have a reading problem called dyslexia. What this mean is that a child with dyslexia has a neurological condition that causes a different way of the wiring of the brain. (International Dyslexia Association website). Now it is understood that dyslexia cover a broad range of things including visual and auditory processing and memory capacity. It can be very hard to identify these difficulties in childhood, as children naturally develop coping strategies to circumvent problems”. Olds S. (2016) The two kinds of dyslexia are development dyslexia and acquired dyslexia. Development dyslexia means the child has a neurological condition that causes the child to have a problem in phonological awareness or not being able to identify and manipulate the sounds of language. Including the capacity to distinguish sounds, count syllables and identify rhymes. The key to positive and fruitful reading experience for a child that may have dyslexia is early testing so that the child can get help as soon as passable. When I was a child in 1980, there was no help unless the child could not read at all. I found out in the 1990s that most people thought that I was lying about having dyslexia because they could not see the problem. I like this quote from the book Overcoming Dyslexia “Dyslexia is often described as a hidden disability because it was thought to lack visible signs. But dyslexia is hidden only from those who do not have to live with it and suffer its effects”. P4 Shaywitz S
