My child has dyslexia, both reading and spelling. The International Dyslexia Association defines dyslexia as a “language-based learning disability.” Dyslexia is the most commonly diagnosed learning disability. This is a common condition that affects the way the brain processes written and spoken language. It’s primarily associated with trouble reading but it can also affect writing, spelling, or even speaking. This learning disability doesn’t prevent my child from understanding complex ideas. It just takes her a longer time to work through the information. Dyslexia can’t be cured entirely but there are treatments available to help. The impact of this learning disability differs from each person depending on the severity of the condition. A child with dyslexia can easily fall behind in school if the appropriate teaching methods regarding this disability or not put into place. These students struggle with complex language skills such as grammar, understanding textbook material, and writing essays. People with dyslexia might also have difficulties with spoken language making it very hard to express themselves clearly or to fully understand what others mean when they speak. Unfortunately, dyslexia can affect a person’s self-image. These students are most likely going to face academic problems causing plenty of stress in frustration. Many will become discouraged and start to think of themselves as dumb or incapable. As a parent of a child with dyslexia, it is important to show my child emotional support and continuously reassure them that they are no less than anyone else. Not only is it important to restore their confidence but it is also crucial to reiterate the fact that there are many successful people out there with dyslexia such as Steven Spielberg, and Mohammed Ali. Dyslexia is one of the most common neurobehavioral disorders that haunt adolescents throughout their childhood. Commonly known as a reading disability (RD), dyslexia is a hereditary complex trait that occurs in five to seventeen percent of people. Neuroimaging studies show that dyslexic individuals display abnormal brain function compared to fluent readers when challenged with reading assignments (7). The exact genes that code for dyslexia are not certain, however substantial studies have potentially linked dyslexia to the KIAA0319 gene, the DCDC2 gene, and the DYX1 gene. The severity of each case is largely determined by environmental factors such exposure to reading and professional intervention. Significantly, the interplay between these external influences and innate genetic characteristics ultimately determine the performance of the dyslexic individual.
There are so many types of mental illnesses that affect people every day. When some people think of mental illnesses they think of the ones that would cause people to have physical symptoms as well, but that’s untrue, there are many more that you would never know anyone has if you were to see them on the street. As defined by the 2008 encyclopedia “a mental illness is any disease of the mind or brain that seriously affects a person’s ability or behavior. Symptoms of a mental illness may include extreme moods, such as excessive sadness or anxiety, or a decreased ability to think clearly or remember well.” A mentally ill person has severe symptoms that damage the person’s ability to function in everyday activities and situations. Every nation and every economic level can be affected by a mental illness. In the United States alone about 3% of the population has severe mental illness and to add to that number about 40% of people will experience a type of mental illness at least once in their lives. Some cases of mental illnesses can go away on their own, but some cases are so severe that they require professional treatment. There is so much more available to help people recover from their symptoms than in the past.
Reading comprehension is a skill that has to be learned by most of the population. This includes adults that have been reading for many years. There is a difference between reading and reading comprehension. Read is defined as, “to look at and understand the meaning of letters, words, or symbols” (Read, 2014). Comprehension is defined as, “the act or action of grasping with intellect” (Comprehension, 2014). Even as an adult, people may have difficulties with reading comprehension. There can be visual learning disorders such as dyslexia. There are many learning techniques and strategies that can negate or even overcome these visual learning disorders. This paper will discuss a few techniques and strategies that when used can improve reading comprehension such as vocabulary building, effective reading, and reading strategies. He incorporates his own life story to support his definition and his ideas in his essay. Treatment for dyslexia is left up to the parents of the child or the adult living with the condition. Between adults and children needing treatments, many of the same kinds of treatment can take place, but also different treatments and techniques will work depending on the type. Three common types of primary dyslexia consist of dyscalculia, dyspraxia, and auditory dyslexia. Dyscalculia relates to one’s ability to perform math skills and the capability of memorizing sequences. Dyspraxia involves difficulty conducting ordinary motor skills, such as waving goodbye and tying a shoe. Not only does this condition affect one subject of a school day, but it likely troubles countless situations in a typical educational setting in one day. A child has a higher chance of having success if the proper treatment at school and at home is available. Parents of a child with dyslexia should talk to the teachers and make sure programs exist in their children’s day and that it suit’s the dyslexic needs in education. Advice given to parents of the child undergoing the evaluation is to not coach up the child, rather let them show their strengths and weaknesses on their own. Programs that help the child show their strengths and work more on their weaknesses will help the child tremendously. I agree with Athenian philosopher, Epicurus’ ethical philosophy that ataraxia is the highest good for a human being and that aponia aids in ataraxia due to one’s mind and body coexisting within a single faction in order for one to function properly at their highest regard. It is often impossible and undesirable for someone to be at their highest good in such mental capacity but be at their lowest capacity via their physical just as it’s undesirable for the opposite to happen.
