Within the “social norms” men/boys are labeled to bet the masculine figure in society while women the most feminine. Men play this role well by always fighting for the title of alpha male. This is something that has been put on us humans since the beginning of time by pretty much everything. Because of this, we are set to think a specific way and act. C.J Pascoe, interviews a certain group of individuals (mostly boys) in River high school. In the book Dude, You’re a Fag, she interviews these groups of boys to show how dominance plays a big part in high school culture. Pascoe starts noticing that they keep calling each other fag, not in the context of calling each other gay, but more to do with being feminine. In many eyes, the portrayal of a gay man is being feminine and girly. They call each other fag , not to call one gay, but to make fun of the action they are doing. They belittle each other to be the alpha male, to gain a sense of control that most high school boys sought for. Being superior than the other is the total level of power in a lot of these people's minds. With that one is somebody, somebody that is a man. Also in this book, Pascoe talks about the difference of treatments between the African American kids and the Caucasian. If a black couple was to act or dance provocatively, they will scold. It was not the same as a white kid doing it, they will just be ignored by the faculty. The African kids will get scolded because of their stereotype of having a high sexual drive. Pascoe is inferring that the word “fag” is used a lot to describe feminine qualities within highschool boys. The way she developed the main point was very simple to understand. The author use examples, scenarios, and the answers of male high school students to contribute to the main point. Including examples, scenarios, and real answers from high school students strengthened her position. When Pascoe says, “ But becoming a fag is as much to do with failing at the masculine tasks of competence, heterosexual prowess, and strength or in any way revealing weakness or femininity as it does with a sexual identity”( Pascoe 210) , she is showing her viewpoint of the subject. Growing up there were these unspoken “rules” that young boys had to live by and have to continue to live by these “rules” as we go about our lives. Growing up if you were to break one of these “rules” it would most likely draw negative attention to yourself and you could quite possibly have some harsh consequences to face in the near future. To be honest, I’m not all that sure how these “rules” came to be or how they get passed down from generation to generation but they’re very much apart of our society so a vast majority of men know of these “rules” and abide by them very closely.
With all of these facts, the author tries to prove that racial differences and privileges appear exaggerated and unrealistic. The privileged and less privileged exist at all levels of society. Duke wants white people to understand that they are in the same position as all other races. The awareness of “white privilege” is only a fallacy that causes feel of guilt without foundation.
Queer Theory goes against the standardized norms that we are socialized to believe is “normal.” Men are associated with the behaviors of assertiveness and dominance. Theorists questions, what is normal? Given that we have these expectations on how people should behave, we mock their behavior to let them know it is unacceptable. For example, homosexuality is seen as unacceptable and abnormal.

The same analysis can be applied to the construction of gender in the ethnographic situation that C.J Pascoe describes in her article “Dude, You’re a Fag”: Adolescent Masculinity and the Fag Discourse.” Pascoe conducts her research in north-central California at a suburban high school she referred to as River High in which she interviews the students on their ideas of gender and the “fag” identity (Pascoe 2005, 333). In the article, she suggests that ideas about gender heavily relies on the difference in the expression of masculinity. In River High, boys use “fag” to describe one’s masculine incompetence, heterosexual prowess and strength (Pascoe 2005, 330). Ben, a white sophomore from River High, explains that anyone can be a called a “fag,” even turning a wrench the wrong way can evoke such name calling (Pascoe 2005, 337).
As we grow, girls are taught how to cook and clean by their mothers, and boys were taught to work on farms or in the fields with their fathers. Throughout Western history it was known to have this Patriarchal system in which the men are the head of the family, and community, during which these spheres between the male and female were divided, each having their own set of roles: the male in the public view and the women in the private view. The men worry about what is going on outside the home like politics, money, control over property while the women take care of what happens on the inside of the home doing things like taking care of the children and doing the house work. Due to ability to work from home, woman have accepted a modern role of holding a career as well as raising a family and men are seen working and helping out with regular house hold chores. People are beginning to conform to are less traditional view, but in my personal experience woman still hold a more traditional role and men are still the primary providers for a family. Our society’s culture has established a set of unwritten cultural laws of how each gender should act, or in other words society has ascribed a stereotype. Men’s gender identity has been one of masculinity, and masculinity is defined as referring to a man or things described as manly. What does manly mean though?
