Discrimination refers to the act of making a distinction or segregation that undermines equality. Typically used referring to the violation of equal rights by race, nationality, politic, gender, or sexual orientation which is the subject I will be explaining in this essay. “The term homosexual was first used in 1869 by Karl-Maria Kertbeny, but it was the book Psychopathia Sexualis by Richard Freiherr von Krafft-Ebing who popularized the concept in 1886”. http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexualidad; Since then, homosexuality has become the subject of intense discussion and study, a very controversial topic because our society has made the acceptance of same sex relationship almost impossible, however polemic over gay marriage, adoption and other rights are the reasons why Gays and Lesbians community are fighting in the present time for equality. In the following essay, I will cover the history of how homosexuals has been discriminates and treated different just because of their sexual orientation, the types of prejudices against them and initiatives individuals and government has implemented in the political, sociological and educational aspect to help them reach similar standards of life as straight people; and how population is opening their minds to understand this type of behavior, helping society and job market to open their doors to employment opportunities for the gay community. Socio-Historical Experience of Gays in terms of Prejudice & Discrimination Although history shows us that homosexuality has been present in the development of the species, the place of homosexuals in society and the perception of homosexuality changed greatly between societies and eras. Gay people, just like any other person must have full recognition and protection by the State and society itself. Comparing the situation in Unites States, with respect to the assertion of rights of various groups, including LGBTI people with other countries, is far from over, as the laws and regulations are constantly changing.
