“The best thing to do with the best things in life is to give them away.” (Dorothy Day) To be faithful means loving God. It means doing what he asked us to do, and to do what you feel is right, and saying what you mean and doing it always. Dorothy Day was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1927. She was the third of five children. Her father, John Day was a sports editor, but later lost his job to an earthquake. Day grew up in a middle-class home, her family took great interest in reading, education and writing. At age 10, Day started attending an Episcopal church, when Day’s family moved to Chicago, she began to study catechism. In 1927, Day went through a phase of spiritual awakening and was later baptized at, ‘Our Lady Help of Christians Parish.’ …show more content…

The least we could do as people, is to help others. We are all equal, we all deserve to have the basic necessities and a roof over our head. Not everyone is lucky that way, so doing something big or small for others is the least we could do for what Jesus has done for us. A little push from a friend, Day put principles in practice. No homeless man or woman were turned away. Everyone was provided with the things they needed. She helped the poor get back on their feet, and gave them a break from their suffering. Although Day was told to leave the care of strangers to charitable agencies, and worry about helping friends and family, she did not listen. In her mind, everyone was family. Day did not grow up in a big house, or have a big bank account. In fact, her family did not always have a stable life. An experience that possibly could have affected Day and made her more understanding and sympathetic to others. Opening your home and shelters for others is not easy, it takes work, dedication and time. Day showed great compassion to those who couldn’t provide for
