I also agree that most people who volunteer do so for the sake of helping others, rather than for selfish reasons. I think it's fair to say that people do good because they want to make differences and give back to their communities. Charitable giving in any form involves a sacrifice of some kind, whether it be time or money; therefore, it makes reasonable sense to say that it is done for good intentions. The whole "feeling good" or satisfaction aspect can and should result from volunteering, but I wouldn't consider as the primary motivator to do good.

As you had mentioned, people could recognize the issues, topics, current events, and organizations that align with their views and goals in order to better motivate themselves to volunteer.
