Communities in the 21st century are often skewed by the constant differences people encounter due to immigration. Communities around the world struggle to connect with each other due to very common sources. Immigration is a huge part of development in most countries, it broadens the diversity of locations all around the world. This may seem like a good thing; however, it also brings some invisible boundaries into play. These boundaries include differences in culture, language, upbringing and everyday traditions. The language barrier, being the main cause of most confusion, is often not coped with correctly and leads to even more confusion between individuals. To fulfill the reference of Barnlund’s view on neighbors in the intro, he says, “Tomorrow we can expect to spend most of our lives in the company of neighbors who will speak in a different tongue, seek different values, move at a different pace, and interact according to a different script.” (Barnlund 47). So, if everyone is so different, how do we interact? It is much easier said than done, but if everyone found a way to communicate and interact with one another coexistence would be an easy goal to achieve. Yet due to the fact that miscommunication is always going to be in play people are scared to interact amongst themselves. This leads the people to feel as if they are empty, like they are missing something in their lives. This something is the communication with other beings. Robert Bella touches on this saying, “Many people feel empty and don’t know why they feel empty. The reason is we are all social animals and we must live and interact and work together in community to become fulfilled.” (Bellah 67). Both quotes contain the key word interact. The two authors speak of their experiences with other cultures and how they differ. Bellah states a problem and addresses it, giving us the solution to the problem. Barnlund on the other hand, gives us a speed bump when it comes to address the problem stated by Bellah. Interactions between people is what makes a community a community, without interaction there would be nothing. In the United States, the cliché of a nation of immigrants is often invoked. Indeed, very few Americans can trace their ancestry to what is now the United States, and the origins of its immigrants have changed many times in American history. Despite the identity of an immigrant nation, changes in the origins of immigrants have often been met with resistance. What began with white, western European settlers fleeing religious persecution morphed into a multicultural nation as immigrants from countries across the globe came to the U.S. in increasing numbers. Like the colonial immigrants before them, these new immigrants sailed to the Americas to gain freedom, flee poverty and famine, and make a better life for themselves. Forgetting their origins as persecuted and excluded people, the older and more established immigrants became possessive about their country and tried to exclude and persecute the immigrant groups from non-western European backgrounds arriving in the U.S. This hostile, defensive, and xenophobic reaction to influxes of “new” immigrants known as Nativism was not far out of the mainstream. There is no singular reason for immigration; motivations range from better economic prospects to political safety. As of late, the number of immigrants living in the United States is an estimated 11 million. Those who immigrate are expected to contribute to the United States culturally, politically, and economically. Yet, full assimilation becomes difficult to achieve when the immigrant is made into “the other” by the country of reception.
The United States has often been referred to as a global “melting pot” due to its assimilation of diverse cultures, nationalities, and ethnicities. In today’s society, this metaphor may be an understatement. Between 1990 and 2010, the number of foreign born United States residents nearly doubled from 20 million to 40 million, increasing the U.S. population from almost 250 million to 350 million people. With U.S. born children and grandchildren of immigrants, immigration contributed to half of this population growth. These immigrants, consisting of mostly Asian and Hispanic backgrounds, have drastically changed the composition of the U.S. population. In 2010, Asians and Hispanics made up 20 percent of the U.S. population, in contrast to a 6 percent share of Asians and Hispanics in 1970. It is predicted that by 2050, the share of immigrants in the United States will increase to one half of the entire population. With this rapid increase in diversity, many citizens have opposing views on its impact on the United States. Despite this large number, the French culture is one of the most nationalistic in the world, which can sometimes come off as hostile to newcomers. The history and development of French immigration policies is full of stubbornness and errors. Even now, the country’s unwillingness to allow new cultures to flourish in their home is becoming a large issue for the masses of immigrants that reside in France.

Life in the modern world is difficult now because of technology has taken up most of our time. It can make us feel lonely and disconnect with reality. As we spend much time on the internet, such as web surfing or instant messaging, we lack with our social skills because we don’t know how to interact with people. People who are “socially anxious” and “lonely” tends to focus more on the internet by making “relationships with others” and slowly interact with people on the web but we don’t socialize with people in our life (Tyler 200-201).
