Communities in the 21st century are often skewed by the constant differences people encounter due to immigration. Communities around the world struggle to connect with each other due to very common sources. Immigration is a huge part of development in most countries, it broadens the diversity of locations all around the world. This may seem like a good thing; however, it also brings some invisible boundaries into play. These boundaries include differences in culture, language, upbringing and everyday traditions. The language barrier, being the main cause of most confusion, is often not coped with correctly and leads to even more confusion between individuals. To fulfill the reference of Barnlund’s view on neighbors in the intro, he says, “Tomorrow we can expect to spend most of our lives in the company of neighbors who will speak in a different tongue, seek different values, move at a different pace, and interact according to a different script.” (Barnlund 47). So, if everyone is so different, how do we interact? It is much easier said than done, but if everyone found a way to communicate and interact with one another coexistence would be an easy goal to achieve. Yet due to the fact that miscommunication is always going to be in play people are scared to interact amongst themselves. This leads the people to feel as if they are empty, like they are missing something in their lives. This something is the communication with other beings. Robert Bella touches on this saying, “Many people feel empty and don’t know why they feel empty. The reason is we are all social animals and we must live and interact and work together in community to become fulfilled.” (Bellah 67). Both quotes contain the key word interact. The two authors speak of their experiences with other cultures and how they differ. Bellah states a problem and addresses it, giving us the solution to the problem. Barnlund on the other hand, gives us a speed bump when it comes to address the problem stated by Bellah. Interactions between people is what makes a community a community, without interaction there would be nothing. We would just be a bunch of people standing around minding our own business and getting nothing done. This is the problem that causes the emptiness that people often feel. Many people will mind to themselves and wonder why they feel empty. This feeling of emptiness is because people are social beings and need to be able to interact with one another in
